If you are planning a trip to Zahna-Elster, you can organize your activities around culture, landscapes and outdoor pursuits. Topics include the history of everyday rural life and technology, churches from different periods, outdoor art and cycling routes. Zahna has its own cultural highlights, including the farming museum and several churches; in Elster, the focus includes, among other things, shipping, the Elbe and local history.

Museums and Churches in Zahna-Elster

The Zahna Farming Museum includes an original apartment dating from 1920 in a four-sided farmstead. The residential building dates back to 1730. The collection includes a tractor collection, harvesting equipment, a preserved blacksmith’s workshop and agricultural tools from past centuries. The exhibition on grain technology traces its development from the sickle and the threshing flail to the combine harvester. This progression shows how harvesting evolved from hand tools to machinery.

The Elster Local History, Carnival and Shipping Museum is divided into three themed sections. Its exhibits and information cover shipping, the Elbe ferry, carnival, domestic life and the Elbe community; there is also a local chronicle. The history of the river and shipping thus meets themes of everyday life and local community life.

The churches also highlight different historical periods. St. Mary’s Church in Zahna is a Romanesque cruciform church, a rarely preserved architectural form. Concerts are held at the Evangelical Church in Zahna; as dates may vary, it is worth checking the current program before your trip. The foundation stone of the Evangelical Church in Elster was laid in 1867, and it was consecrated in 1871. In Leetza, the first church was built as a fieldstone church around 1200.

Outdoor Art and Landscapes

BĂĽlzig Sculpture Park combines art with open landscapes: the roughly 20-hectare meadow includes the BĂĽlzig Graben and small patches of woodland. Since 1993, angel sculptures made of wood, metal and other materials have shaped the grounds. The sculptures are integrated into the landscape and invite visitors to look, touch and reflect. This distinguishes the park from the collections and historic buildings that define the cultural offerings elsewhere.

In Elster, you can stroll along the landscaped Elbe promenade. The river also shapes route planning: in the town of Elster, the Elbe Cycle Route runs directly along the river. The Elster ferry connects the sections of the Elbe Cycle Route on the left and right banks between Lutherstadt Wittenberg and Torgau. Check the current ferry service before setting out.

Cycling Routes for Different Trips

Zahna and Elster offer different starting points for cycling trips. The Berlin–Leipzig Route passes through Zahna and crosses the Fläming. It is approximately 250 kilometers long overall; this figure refers to the entire route. The route uses dedicated cycle paths, hiking trails, low-traffic roads, and field and forest tracks. Its surfaces and types of paths therefore vary rather than consisting exclusively of a single type of cycle route.

By contrast, the Elbe Cycle Route in Elster follows the Elbe directly, and the ferry connects it to sections on the opposite bank. When planning your trip to Zahna-Elster, this distinction can help you choose the right focus: the route through Zahna and the Fläming, or the riverside route near Elster. Check the ferry service in advance and take your chosen route into account when planning.
