Annaburg brings together Renaissance architecture, porcelain history and woodland scenery. Annaburg Palace and the Amtshaus represent different periods in history; the Porzellaneum is dedicated to local porcelain production. The Thiergarten nature reserve adjoins the southern edge of the town. When planning your stay, you can start by asking yourself whether you would prefer to focus on buildings and museums or on trails and nature.

The Palace and Amtshaus: Two Historic Buildings

Annaburg Palace is a four-wing Renaissance palace, built between 1572 and 1575 for Anna, Princess of Denmark and Norway. Another dated building is the Annaburg Amtshaus, built in 1578. Its surviving historic details include a painted wooden ceiling, vaulted kitchens and door surrounds dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. The two buildings offer different starting points for a visit focused on cultural history: the palace for the Renaissance and its original dedication, and the Amtshaus for its preserved interior features.

The Porzellaneum: History and Hands-On Creativity

The Annaburg Porzellaneum documents more than 140 years of local porcelain history. Exhibits and demonstration pieces illustrate the individual stages of production. This allows you to explore not only the history of porcelain but also how finished pieces are made from the material. In the painting studio, visitors of all ages can decorate porcelain; advance booking is required. Making your own porcelain is also one of the Porzellaneum’s offerings. On-site amenities include a shop, a café, step-free access and museum education programs.

More Traces of History in the Museum and Town

The Amtshaus Museum explores several chapters of Annaburg’s history. These include the military school for boys and the non-commissioned officers’ preparatory school, forestry and the pine seed facility, as well as an internment camp for Indian prisoners of war. A historic classroom and everyday objects from the 18th to the 20th century round out the exhibits. The tour thus connects institutional history with objects from everyday life. In Annaburg’s market square, the Michael Stifel Fountain commemorates the mathematician and pastor Michael Stifel’s failed 1533 prediction of the end of the world. The seed-drying facility, built in 1897, survives as a testament to forestry and forest science; it is described as one of the oldest facilities of its kind in Central Germany.

Thiergarten and Trails Through the Forest

The wildlife park within the town is designated a nature reserve and is a wooded remnant of a former princely hunting park associated with Annaburg Palace. The Thiergarten Annaburg nature reserve directly borders the southern residential area. It includes the Kleine Tiergarten, an old deciduous forest with burial mounds. Improved trails, rest areas and information boards give the Kleine Tiergarten the character of a small nature trail. The Zweistromweg runs alongside the wildlife park and offers walking trails through oak woodland for a peaceful break. Visitors can therefore choose between historic buildings and collections, and trails through a woodland landscape.

Choose the Focus of Your Stay

If you are mainly interested in architecture and history, the palace, Amtshaus and museum offer different topics and historical periods. For a quieter time outdoors, consider the trails in the Kleine Tiergarten and the Zweistromweg. The Porzellaneum combines exhibits with hands-on activities; remember that advance booking is required for the painting studio. These differences can help you match Annaburg to your travel interests and find suitable hotels for your stay.
