Ostrau combines a Baroque palace with a historic park, music history and seasonal impressions. These features offer different ways to plan your stay: architecture, routes, church music history or the blossoms in the park. You can shape your trip around the themes that matter to you.

Palace and Park

The Baroque palace was built by Ludwig von Veltheim starting in 1710; Louis Remy de la Fosse designed the three-winged complex. “Three-winged” describes the division of the building into three wings. This offers a concrete introduction to architectural history: the construction period, patron and design are clearly identified.

The historic palace park covers 14 hectares and is now part of the “Gartenträume – Historic Parks in Saxony-Anhalt” network. Its size gives a sense of the scale of the grounds; its membership in the network places the park among Saxony-Anhalt’s historic parks. The palace and park are connected, but can be viewed according to different interests: the building for its Baroque design, and the park for its historical context and scale.

Routes and Tours

The eastern route descends along a lightly traveled district road to Ostrau Palace and Park. A section around 34 kilometers long runs from Niemberg station to Stumsdorf station via Kütten, Ostrau, Cösitz, Mößlitz and Zörbig. The distance and sequence of places give you a general overview of this section of the route; Ostrau lies between Kütten and Cösitz. Traffic conditions and routes can change, so check the current route before setting out.

The Wettin Castles and Parks Tour is suitable for families with children.

Church and Music History

St. George’s patronage church is still used by the local congregation of the Evangelical Parish of Ostrau and is also a venue for cultural events. It is also connected with the music history of Central Germany: the rediscovery and recording of the cantatas by Johann Justus Kahle, as well as the church’s inclusion in the “Road of Music” network in 2010, established it as an authentic site of this musical heritage. For your travel plans, the church is a cultural highlight distinct from the palace’s architecture and the park’s history.

With the “Mission Classroom” app, you can explore the filming location at Ostrau Palace; various digital stations guide you through the mission. This approach focuses on the filming location and the mission itself, complementing the historical themes with a digital way to explore. As app availability and programming may change, check in advance whether the mission will be available during your trip.

Seasonal Nature and Café Offerings

At the end of February, many thousands of winter aconites bloom bright yellow in Ostrau Park. Blooming time depends on the weather, so the end of February is a guide rather than a fixed date for planning a trip around the blossoms.

The offerings at Schloss-Café Ostrau also vary by season. In summer, there are homemade cakes, ice cream and refreshing drinks; in winter, there are hot chocolate, homemade WinterlingPunsch, mulled wine and hot butter pretzels. This lets you relate the café selection to the time of year. Offerings may change, so it’s worth checking the current selection before making plans.
