Discover Wettin-Löbejün: Nature, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Wettin-Löbejün
When planning a trip to Wettin-Löbejün, you can weigh up nature trails and cultural attractions as potential focuses. The town is located in the Lower Saale Valley Nature Park. In the district of Wettin, the landscape is characterized by dry grasslands on rocky ground, steep slopes and Saale floodplains. Possible highlights include circular trails, cycling routes, the castle, a museum and guided town tours. This lets you plan around the attractions you want to make time for.
Hiking through geology and the porphyry landscape
The Wettin Geopath is a nine-kilometre circular route northwest of Wettin. You can allow about three hours to walk it; this is only a guide, as your pace and trail conditions affect the actual walking time. Ten information boards explain the local geology and the mining remains from the extraction of coal, copper shale and potash. The trail combines exercise with an up-close look at the landscape and its natural resources.
A shorter route is the 2.5-kilometre “Wettin/Gimritz Porphyry Landscape” nature trail. It is a circular route, considered suitable for families, and passes through the “Porphyry Hill Landscape near Gimritz” protected area. The two trails therefore differ considerably in length and in the subjects they cover: the Geopath focuses on geology and mining, while the nature trail passes through the protected area.
Castles, music and architectural history
Wettin Castle is first documented in 961. You can book tours of the castle complex through Wettin-Information; booking arrangements may change, so it is worth checking in advance. The town tours bookable through Wettin-Information also cover the Templar Chapel, St. Nicholas Church, local geology and mining, Pögritz Mill and the Bismarck Tower, in addition to the castle. The guided tours thus cover architectural and local history as well as nature and mining.
The Templar Chapel of Our Lady in Mücheln hosts church services, concerts and guided tours. The offerings may vary depending on the season or program, so if you are planning a visit for a specific date, it is a good idea to check the current program.
The Carl Loewe Museum is housed in a former school built on the foundations of Carl Loewe’s birthplace. The permanent exhibition documents the composer’s life and work. While the museum is open, you can listen to Loewe’s compositions at listening stations. The museum is about 250 metres from public transport.
The late Gothic St. Peter’s Church in Löbejün can also be included in a cultural itinerary: it is visible from the Fuhne Cycle Route. The 21-metre-high Wettin Bismarck Tower stands on a wooded porphyry hill. On a clear day, the view extends across the Saale Valley, mining remains and Petersberg as far as the Brocken. Alongside the museum and church, this gives you the option of visiting a distinctive viewpoint and taking in views of the surrounding area.
Cycling through the region
The 60-kilometre Wettin Way West Route is a circular cycling tour between the Saale Valley and Petersberg. It passes through Wettin, Löbejün and Schlettau, as well as along the Fuhne Cycle Route. Historical attractions are combined with stretches through the Lower Saale Valley Nature Park and several nature reserves. If you would like to combine cycling with cultural and landscape highlights, this route offers a different timeframe and setting from the two hiking trails.
