Krosigk combines architectural and village history with mills, as well as nature and leisure activities. This gives you several focal points for planning your trip: historic buildings, nature and outdoor activities.

Castle, Church and Local History

Krosigk Castle was first mentioned in a document in 927 as “castrum croszok” and was originally a moated castle. The keep was probably built as a defensive tower in the 9th century. The dates refer to different aspects: the likely construction period of the tower and the castle’s first documented mention.

Construction of Krosigk village church began in 1152 on a hill above the village. The dovecote on the parish grounds was built in 1729 as a “monument of gratitude” by “faithful souls.” The Krosigk local history room is also part of the village’s history: it is the local history museum of the Krosigk Cultural and Local History Association (Kultur- und Heimatverein Krosigk e. V.) on Fleischergasse.

Mill History and Landscape

Krosigk Watermill is used as an excursion restaurant and museum. Its new waterwheel was officially set in motion on June 9, 2025. If the wheel’s current operation is important for your visit, it is best to check locally. The post mill came to Krosigk from Gollma in 1995. A storm destroyed it in 2007; it was rebuilt by 2010. The histories of the two mills differ: one centers on the more recent commissioning of its waterwheel, while the other focuses on its relocation and reconstruction.

WindmĂĽhlenberg near Krosigk is a distinctive porphyry hill in an intensively farmed landscape. The east-facing semi-dry grasslands around Krosigk and Kaltenmark offer a different natural feature. They provide habitats for grasshoppers, ground beetles, wild bees and butterflies.

MĂĽhlteich Pond and Recreation Area

There is a spacious, well-maintained green space by MĂĽhlteich pond, with a barbecue area, playgrounds, a Kneipp facility, an orchard and art. As individual facilities may change, check their current status before visiting. Horchen Recreation Area includes a fitness trail by the large oak tree in the direction of the watermill. Information boards by MĂĽhlteich pond show walkers, hikers and cyclists ways to explore the region.

Routes with Different Focal Points

Krosigk is a stop on the 92.98-kilometer “Saalekreis Northwest in One Day” circular cycling route. The approximately 60-kilometer Wettin West Route passes by Krosigk Castle complex and fortified church on a detour. On the approximately 20-kilometer “Around Petersberg” half-day tour, Krosigk Castle complex and fortified church are the main destination.

When comparing routes, it is not just the distance that matters, but also Krosigk’s role on each one: the village is a stop on the circular cycling route, a detour destination on the West Route, and the main destination on the half-day tour. This lets you choose a tour based on your preferred focus without treating the different distances and formats as equivalent.
