Several themes may influence your choice of where to stay in Schochwitz: historic buildings, a publicly accessible castle park or the landscape of the Laweke Valley. The Church of St. Benedict and Schochwitz Castle each offer their own historical focus; the park and surrounding area add recreational and nature-related attractions. If you are weighing up which side of the town suits your trip before searching for a hotel, these differences can help you choose where to stay.

Building history: the village church and castle

The foundation stone of the Church of St. Benedict was laid in 1256. Its nave is Romanesque; the apse was added later in the Gothic style. This distinguishes the date of construction from the architecture: 1256 marks the laying of the foundation stone, while the Romanesque nave and later Gothic apse refer to different parts and phases of the building. Here, Romanesque and Gothic do not describe two separate churches, but the styles of two parts of the building.

Schochwitz Castle originated as a moated castle in the 12th century. The present-day castle was built between 1601 and 1606, incorporating the older fortifications. Compared with the village church, whose foundation stone was laid in 1256, the dates for the castle refer to different stages: the 12th century marks its origins as a moated castle, while 1601 to 1606 refers to the later construction phase of the present-day castle.

Castle park and recreational activities

The publicly accessible castle park includes a pond, a playground and a small nature trail. In addition, the Naturwerkstatt e. V. association offers recreational activities for children and adults. For planning purposes, these are two distinct recreational options: the three features mentioned are part of the park, while the additional activities are offered by the association. This helps you decide whether the park as a publicly accessible place or the association’s activities are more important to you.

Landscape and character of the town

Schochwitz is located in the Laweke Valley Landscape Protection Area and the Lower Saale Valley Nature Park. The surrounding area is hilly and predominantly agricultural; a peaceful atmosphere and little traffic noise are also part of the town’s character. The townscape is shaped in part by the wild and romantic Luppholz woodland. So, when choosing a destination for its atmosphere, you can consider not only individual buildings but also landscape features: Luppholz is a specific point of reference in the townscape, while the hills, agriculture and low traffic noise describe the wider setting.

International Bat Night

One seasonal event is International Bat Night, traditionally held in Schochwitz on the last weekend in August. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the exact event date in advance. At one Batnight event, mist nets were set up in the castle park. From 6 to 7 p.m., visitors could learn about bats in Saxony-Anhalt and moths as their food source at an information stand; children made crafts and played.
