Kundert: Mining History and Landscape
Kundert’s local history includes the Steinchen copper ore mine. It was in operation from 1896 to 1926, giving the area’s mining history a clear historical timeframe.
Kundert lies within the Kroppacher Schweiz nature and landscape conservation area. The headwaters of the Lauterbach, Selbach and Erchebach are located within Kundert’s municipal boundaries. In addition to its mining past, the protected area and the headwaters of the Lauterbach, Selbach and Erchebach within Kundert’s municipal boundaries shape the way the village is defined.
Kroppacher Schweiz in the Westerwald
In the wider Westerwald destination, Kroppacher Schweiz offers wooded slopes, quiet river valleys and viewpoints overlooking the Nister Valley. There are also numerous hiking and cycling trails through a largely unspoiled landscape. This regional perspective complements Kundert’s own local features with further ideas for planning a trip.
Hikers can compare the WesterwaldSteig and Druidensteig using their route details. The WesterwaldSteig is 235 kilometres long and has 16 stages. The Druidensteig covers 94 kilometres in seven daily stages, passes through seven river valleys and features more than 30 geo-information points. The figures show the different route lengths and number of stages; for the Druidensteig, information about river valleys and geo-information points is also available. Check the current route planner when planning your WesterwaldSteig hike. Also check whether the Druidensteig’s interpretive features are up to date.
The “Weltende” nature trail in Kroppacher Schweiz follows narrow paths, sections secured with wire ropes and natural trails. Along the way, there are views across the Nister Valley. Access and trail conditions may vary seasonally, so check before your visit. The Holzbach Gorge offers a different kind of scenery: this approximately one-kilometre-long breakthrough valley has basalt walls up to 30 metres high.
In the Westerwald, Stöffel-Park combines industrial heritage, earth history and nature across a former basalt quarry covering around 140 hectares. The TERTIÄRUM displays fossils, including the famous “Stöffel mouse,” which document around 25 million years of Earth’s history. This offers another way to explore a regional geological theme through exhibits.
In Hachenburg, restored half-timbered houses around the Alter Markt (Old Market) define the historic town centre; the Löwenbrunnen (Lion Fountain) is also part of its historic atmosphere. The Westerwald Ceramics Museum presents the history of working with clay. Most of the objects on display originated in a Westerwald clay pit. Visitors can get creative themselves in the well-equipped museum workshop under expert guidance. Check the current workshop programme and booking conditions before your trip.
The Hachenburg Experience Brewery offers beer experience tours and brewing courses; individual appointments can be arranged by telephone. Check the current booking arrangements directly with the brewery in advance.
