Wiesbaum – Juniper Heath, Church History and the Eifelsteig
Accommodation in Wiesbaum
Wiesbaum combines a distinctive cultural landscape with a specific long-distance hiking stage and a historical connection reaching far back in time. Local highlights include woodland, juniper heath and the Old Church; a stage of the Eifelsteig starts in Mirbach. The farmers’ market and farm produce add a regional dimension. Hiking, nature and local history therefore stand alongside one another as distinct areas of interest.
Wiesbaum’s Landscape and History
Wiesbaum’s landscape is characterized by extensive woodland, juniper heath, hedgerows and vegetation along the streams. On Baumberg, towards Feusdorf, there is a 3-hectare juniper heath that is considered an important natural monument. The Old Church in Wiesbaum can be traced back to 1131. It adds a historical landmark in the village to the nature and landscape highlights.
Hiking from Mirbach
The Eifelsteig passes through Mirbach, a district of Wiesbaum; stage 8 to Hillesheim starts there. It is 26.1 kilometers long and follows forest paths, fields and meadows, with views of the Eifel’s volcanic landscape along the way. The Eifelsteig is classified as a premium long-distance hiking trail. The start, finish and changes in scenery give you specific points of reference for planning your hike.
Information on public transport is also available for this stage: buses serve the starting point at Mirbach or Traudenhof, as well as the return connection from Hillesheim. Check bus connections and any replacement rail services before setting off, as they may change.
Market, Farm Produce and Other Activities
The farmers’ market at the parish church takes place on Fridays. Regional traders and producers sell local products there. Traudenhof, between Mirbach and Wiesbaum, offers milk, eggs, potatoes and honey; seasonal products are available at certain times, too. If you plan to visit the market or are interested in seasonal goods, check the market day and selection in advance.
If you would like to include golf in your travel plans, the Eifel Golf Club is about 2.5 kilometers from Wiesbaum. Check access and course conditions before your visit.
Regional Setting: Vulkaneifel
In the wider Vulkaneifel travel region, maars and other traces of volcanism shape the regional setting. To date, 77 maars have been documented there; 350 eruption centers have also been counted, around 270 of them from the more recent period. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which took place around 10,900 years ago. These figures provide geological context for the Vulkaneifel landscape. In the Vulkaneifel, the Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun features three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars and mineral springs.
The Vulkaneifel Trails in the Vulkaneifel travel region also lead to scenic highlights on both sides of the Eifelsteig. The routes are marked and signposted, and offer half-day hikes, day hikes and multi-day hikes. Alongside the specific stage described from Mirbach, this gives you a choice of regional hiking options with different time frames.
