Bolsdorf offers views across the Niederbettingen Kyll Valley, geological features and trails with different focuses. At Piesberg, the emphasis is on views of the Eifel landscape; in Bolsdorfer Tälchen, natural features meet trails of varying lengths. From here, the Kalkeifel Cycling Route heads towards Hillesheim, connecting the Kyll Valley with the Ahr Valley. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth distinguishing between a viewpoint, the valley area and a cycling route that continues further afield.

Views and geological features

The viewpoint at Piesberg, known locally as “de Pees,” overlooks the Niederbettingen Kyll Valley and the Eifel landscape. At approximately 420 metres above sea level, it is considered the highest point in Bolsdorf and the surrounding area. Piesberg thus combines a clear connection to the area’s elevation with views encompassing the Kyll Valley and the wider Eifel landscape. If you are primarily considering a specific viewpoint when choosing where to go, de Pees is a distinctive destination in the Bolsdorf landscape.

The Mariengrotte offers a different perspective. It stands on a hill near the Bolsdorf cemetery and is framed by lava rock. The rock is a reminder of the volcanic history of the Vulkaneifel. As well as offering views of the landscape, the site also highlights the geological character of the surrounding area.

Trails and nature in Bolsdorfer Tälchen

Dolomite limestone cliffs can be seen in Bolsdorfer Tälchen, remnants of ancient coral reefs. This is a different geological feature from the lava rock at the Mariengrotte: the cliffs in the valley are evidence of former reefs, while the grotto is connected to the volcanic history of the Vulkaneifel. If you would like to understand the landscape not only through its viewpoints but also through its rocks, this contrast offers two distinct natural features.

The valley also has a lake with a biotope, an ecological educational trail and an information pavilion. The area offers opportunities for hiking, cycling and jogging, as well as trails of various lengths from Bolsdorf towards Hillesheim. The Eifelsteig and Kalkeifel Cycling Route are among the routes here. The different activities and trail lengths give you two specific criteria to consider when planning: first decide whether you want to explore on foot, by bike or by jogging, then choose a suitable route.

Cycling between the Kyll and Ahr valleys

The Kalkeifel Cycling Route connects the Kyll and Ahr valleys. From Bolsdorf, it runs almost entirely on level ground via Hillesheim and along a former railway line towards Kerpen; from there, it continues through the Ahbach Valley to the Ahr. The connection between the valleys is the route’s defining feature, whereas the trails in Bolsdorfer Tälchen offer a range of activities and lengths. When planning, you can therefore compare a connection between two valleys with the different trail options in the valley. Surface conditions can change; check the current conditions before your bike ride.
