When planning a trip to Herold, two themes go well together: a hiking route through the Jammertal and local history centered on the Backes and the mills. You can plan your stay around the places and activities that interest you.

Hiking between Herold and the Dörsbach Valley

A hiking route leads from Herold through the Jammertal to Obernhof. The Jammertalweg runs through the Dörsbach Valley between Obernhof and Katzenelnbogen. These place names help you find your bearings: the first route focuses on Herold as its starting point and Obernhof as its destination, while Obernhof and Katzenelnbogen are the reference points for the Jammertalweg through the valley. This can help you decide which route best suits your hiking plans. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

In the wider Einrich region, large parts of the landscape lie within Nassau Nature Park; hills, valleys, and ravines are often accessible only on foot. In the wider Aar-Einrich region, hiking trails pass through forests and meadows and offer views of the Einrich hills and the Aar Valley. This gives you a choice of contrasting landscapes: valleys and ravines, as well as forests, meadows, and hilltop views. When comparing hikes, consider the surroundings and the route described.

The Backes and the history of the mills

Herold is considered a settlement established by clearing woodland in the post-Carolingian period and was first mentioned around 1260. It had historical ties to the Vierherrisches Gebiet and later to the Duchy of Nassau. The first mention around 1260 does not mean that this was when the settlement was founded. The buildings offer another point of reference: Herold’s oldest building is the historic bakehouse, the Backes, which is believed to have been built around 1500.

The original village houses were grouped around the Backes. This means the building can be understood both as part of the area’s architectural history and in the context of the former settlement layout. A mill near Herold was mentioned in 1197 as the Heyer Mill and was later called the Haarmühle. The Dillenberger Mill is a different mill; it was mentioned in 1733 in the historic area of Herold. These dates relate to different mill names, not to a continuous sequence of names.

An ironworks was established near a mill by Herold in 1671. In the wider Dörsbach Valley, 25 mills once used the water power of the Dörsbach; these mills are no longer in operation. The history of milling therefore extends from individual historic sites near Herold to the use of water power throughout the wider valley.

Scenery, cycling, and culture

In the wider Dörsbach Valley, the Lieselei and Winkelei viewpoints offer views of an unspoiled valley. Check current access arrangements if you plan to visit these viewpoints. In the wider Aar-Einrich region, cycling routes cater to both leisurely rides and more demanding mountain bike outings, crossing flat and hilly terrain. When planning a cycling trip, consider both your preferred type of ride and the terrain. Check route conditions and facilities before your trip.

Cultural experiences in the wider Aar-Einrich region include historic villages, churches, castles, museums, and guided tours. If you would like to visit a particular attraction, check visiting arrangements in advance. For cyclists, the Gasthof Dörsbachhöhe is listed as a bike-friendly bed+bike accommodation and meets the relevant requirements. Check availability for your travel dates directly before booking.
