Rettert combines hiking experiences with Roman history and a historic townscape. Two routes offer different highlights: a circular route via the Roman fort at Holzhausen and the Limes Hiking Trail, and a 3-kilometre route from the cemetery car park through the forest and along the Hasenbach stream. In the village, a listed Protestant parish church, a designated conservation area and half-timbered façades draw attention to its architectural history. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether nature, the Limes or local history should take priority.

Hiking between the fort, stream and forest

A circular hike from Rettert follows the Hessenstraße to the Roman fort at Holzhausen, then continues along the Limes Hiking Trail and returns via the former route of the Nassau narrow-gauge railway. This route brings together the fort, the Limes Hiking Trail and the historic railway line.

A 3-kilometre trail leads downhill from the cemetery car park through the forest to the Sauerbrunnen spring and the Hasenbach stream. It then continues along blossom-filled forest edges to the forest swimming pool. The route therefore begins with a wooded descent before following the flower-lined forest edges.

One practical difference can help you choose a route: a circular hike via the fort and former railway line, or a 3-kilometre trail taking in the forest, Sauerbrunnen spring, Hasenbach stream and forest swimming pool. This lets you choose according to the landscapes and historical themes that interest you most.

The Limes and the Three Forts Circular Trail

The Limes runs through Rettert’s municipal area and has been protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. Rettert is one of six municipalities that jointly developed the Three Forts Circular Trail. The route uses sections of the Loreley-Aar Cycle Route, the Limes Long-Distance Hiking Trail and the German Limes Cycle Route. Its key Limes destinations include Holzhausen Fort, Pfarrhofen small fort, watchtower 2/25 and the reconstructed Limes Fort at Pohl.

One variant of the Three Forts Circular Trail follows the Hessenstraße to Rettert and continues along the Rettertbach stream into the Hasenbach valley. If you would like to follow this particular route, check local trail conditions before setting out. You can also choose between a circular hike taking in the fort and railway line, and the variant through Rettert and along the Rettertbach.

Nature park, Hasenbach and Sauerbrunnen springs

Rettert forms the southern tip of Nassau Nature Park. The Hasenbach rises in the Rettert area at the Limes; two mineral springs are located right beside the stream. Remains of a Roman villa with a bathhouse were found at the source of the Hasenbach. Water and Roman history are therefore two tangible features of the local landscape: the mineral springs beside the stream and the archaeological find at its source.

Church, conservation area and half-timbered buildings

The listed Protestant parish church dates from the 17th or 18th century and has a Gothic west tower. Parts of Rheinstraße and Pfarrgasse around the church form a designated conservation area; the church lies within it. West of the church are five farmsteads with residential buildings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries and preserved half-timbered façades.

These buildings offer different points of reference for understanding the historic townscape: the church, the conservation area encompassing the two streets, and the five farmsteads. The Gothic west tower and half-timbered façades reveal different architectural details. Rettert’s architectural heritage thus extends beyond a single building to include parts of the streetscape and several farmsteads.

Local traditions and choosing a hotel

The Fahlerkerb is celebrated in Rettert every three years and is regarded as a centuries-old local tradition. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the exact dates before your trip.

The Landgasthof Gemmer is considered one of Germany’s oldest distilleries still in operation and produces single malt whisky. For current information about production or visitor opportunities, check locally in advance.

Then compare the stated location and the specific amenities listed in each hotel offer.
