Aspisheim can be explored from different perspectives: Roman traces, church buildings from several periods, viewpoints, and routes for hiking and cycling. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

Roman Traces and Churches

Archaeological finds indicate that Aspisheim has been settled since the Neolithic period. In Roman times, the road from Alzey to Bingen passed through the village. Near the Protestant church, a Roman bath formed part of a villa rustica dating from the 3rd century; other Roman graves and traces of buildings add to the picture. A villa rustica was a Roman country estate.

During the excavation of the bath, a semicircular pool measuring 3.40 metres in diameter and 0.7 metres deep was uncovered. A marble slab marks the site. The bath is part of the “Romans in Rheinhessen” circular trail. A row-grave cemetery dating from the 6th century is also among Aspisheim’s archaeological remains.

The church’s history stretches from the Middle Ages to the post-war period. The chancel tower of the former St Martin’s Church dates from the early 13th century; the church is part of the “Gothic Churches in Rheinhessen” circular trail. The present-day Catholic church was built in 1951, after the former chapel was abandoned following the Second World War. It houses six 18th-century figures of apostles, as well as a Madonna from the former chapel.

Hilltop Views and Routes

As Aspisheim’s highest point, Goldacker offers views across the Rheinhessen hills towards the Donnersberg in the Palatinate and the Feldberg in the Taunus. Around three kilometres of surfaced farm roads also serve as walking paths.

Another viewpoint is the Wingertschaukel Rheinhessenblick, above Aspisheim. From there, views extend across the Rheinhessen hills towards the Rheingau and the HunsrĂĽck. Wooden seats with backrests are designed for two people. Both viewpoints offer wide-ranging views across the hills, but look towards different distant landmarks.

Cycling and Regional Routes

Aspisheim is connected to the cycling network of the municipal association, which links all its local communities. A cycling tour from Sprendlingen via the Zotzenheimer Horn can continue to Aspisheim along a cycle path. The Sprendlingen-Gensingen area has more than 70 kilometres of cycling and hiking routes. For planning, you can distinguish between the network linking the local communities and the specific route from Sprendlingen to Aspisheim.

Wine and Soils

Aspisheim’s former river deposits include sand and gravel; some grape varieties thrive in these soils. Various wines are available by the glass and by the bottle in Aspisheim. As the selection may change, check what is currently available in advance.
