Historic buildings and routes in the Appelbach Valley give Badenheim its distinctive character. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, you can plan around these themes: would you like to spend more time exploring local history, or focus on the cycling routes and a wine-related experience?

Local history in streets, churches and monuments

Badenheim’s historic center is designated as a protected historic district. It encompasses the medieval part of the village around Hauptstraße, Bratergasse, Kellergasse, Mühlgasse and Bahnhofstraße. This draws attention to a historic area that includes several streets.

The Catholic church was built between 1772 and 1775. The present-day Protestant church was built in 1827–1829 to designs by Augustin Wetter, the City of Mainz’s master builder. It is a Neoclassical hall church and is considered a typical monumentalized Neoclassical village church of Rheinhessen. “Hall church” describes the building’s basic form, while Neoclassicism is its architectural style. The 18th-century organ case came from the previous church and has been preserved in the present-day Protestant church.

The former Schönborn administrative winery at Hauptstraße 1 is a hook-shaped complex dating from 1783. Badenheim cemetery is also home to a monument to poet Isaak Maus, erected in 1896: a richly sculpted sandstone stele crowned with an eagle statue. The area’s historical points of interest therefore range from churches and a former administrative winery to a literary monument.

Cycling and wine experiences

From Badenheim, the Appelbach cycle path follows the Appelbach Valley from village to village through an unspoiled landscape. You can plan your route around this combination of the valley’s course and the sequence of villages.

A paved cycle path runs from the Appelbach Valley to Wöllstein, passing directly by Fuhr Winery. It is also considered suitable for inline skaters and walkers. Check current path conditions before setting out.
