Nimsreuland is a suitable destination for anyone who wants to combine cycling with a look at historic buildings. The Nims Cycle Route follows the Nims through the village; the area is also home to dated wayside crosses and older farm buildings. The Willibrordus Trail adds a pilgrimage route to these themes. This gives you three different perspectives to consider when planning your trip: the cycling route through the Nimstal valley, the architectural history of individual buildings, and religious sites along the way.

Cycling along the Nims

The Nims Cycle Route is 64.4 kilometres long, rated as moderately difficult, and runs from Weinsheim near Prüm to the Irreler Mühle. Its northern section runs from Weinsheim through the Schönecker Schweiz to Bitburg; steeper climbs and descents are part of the route profile there. These details provide an overview of a longer tour, while the section between Schönecken and Lasel establishes the specific connection to the village.

This section follows the Nims through Nimsreuland and adds around six kilometres of cycle path to the route. It was completed and officially opened in September 2022. The distances refer to different scales: 64.4 kilometres is the length of the entire route, while around six kilometres is the additional section between Schönecken and Lasel. If you are deciding between a longer cycling tour and the route through the village, this distinction will help with your planning.

Historic buildings and wayside crosses

A shaft cross on the main road is dated 1696. The imposing transverse farmhouse at Schweißtal 1 is dated 1804 and has an extension from the 19th century. The Winkelhof at Hauptstraße 2 is right beside the Nims. The historic building dates predominantly from the mid-19th century and retains older features, including a former smithy; most of the paving is historic too. A farm building at Schweißtal 2 also dates from the 19th century.

The wayside monuments are distinguished by their dates and reliefs. The wayside shrine north of Schweißtal 1, on the road to Schönecken, is dated 1786 and depicts Saint Catherine. Southeast of the wayside chapel is a wayside cross with a relief of Saint Matthias; it is dated 1758. The farm buildings, meanwhile, preserve details such as alterations, older architectural elements and traces of former uses.

The Willibrordus Trail as a destination in its own right

On the Willibrordus Trail, Route 5 passes through Nimsreuland, by the Heisdorfer Bach and through Lascheid. At Meyersruh in the Schönecker Schweiz, Route 5 passes a rest area at a junction with rock formations and a pilgrim monument. Alongside cycling, the trail offers a distinct way to explore the area: its named stops and the site at Meyersruh are part of the pilgrimage route, while the cycling information focuses on the route along the Nims and the section through Nimsreuland.
