Pronsfeld: Nature, Cycling Routes and Railway History
Accommodation in Pronsfeld
Pronsfeld combines walking and cycling routes with a protected valley and the history of a former railway junction. This means you can combine outdoor activities with a look at the town’s history during your stay.
Nature and Hiking Trails
The Alfbach Valley near Pronsfeld is a protected nature area. With a little luck, you may spot beavers at “work” there; sightings cannot be guaranteed. Eight hiking trails start in Pronsfeld at the hiking and cycling car park by the former railway station. They pass through fields and forests to particularly attractive viewpoints such as Hochberg. The Riesenstuhl viewing chair offers another named landmark: you can reach it on foot from the cemetery at the Old Church via the K120, and it stands at an altitude of about 463 m.
Cycling in Pronsfeld
The former railway station is the starting point for cycling tours along former railway lines. The large car park offers good parking for cyclists, hikers and inline skaters arriving by car. The Enz Cycle Route, Prüm Cycle Route and Eifel-Ardennes Cycle Route meet at the Pronsfeld cycle route junction. The railway-line cycle path from Pronsfeld to Prüm is 10 km one way and fully paved. The Enz Cycle Route runs from Pronsfeld to Neuerburg for 25 km along a former railway line. The two routes therefore differ in destination and stated distance: Prüm is 10 km one way, while the Enz Cycle Route to Neuerburg is 25 km.
Mountain Biking
Mountain bikers can enjoy a circular route of around 2 km linking Bike Park Pronsfeld and the Hochberg Trail. Since 2019, mountain bikers have been able to use a dirt line with four dirt jumps and a pump track at the bike park. The pump track includes two 180° banked turns, various bumps and small doubles; the facility is designed for training fitness and coordination. The circular route and the bike park features offer different ways to plan: an approximate connection length on the one hand, and individual training features on the other.
Townscape and Railway History
The parish church in the centre of Pronsfeld has a slate-covered dome; its freestanding bell tower was built in 1962. The small, informative railway museum recalls the time when Pronsfeld was a railway junction. The church and museum offer different points of interest: the architecture of the parish church on the one hand, and the history of the railway in the town on the other.
