Buchet lies near the Belgian border in the Schneifel; parts of the Schneifel ridge are within the municipality. The municipality is part of the North Eifel Nature Park and the German-Belgian Nature Park, and the Alfbach stream flows through Buchet. The border location, ridge and stream give the landscape its varied character. For planning your trip, consider combining hiking trails, viewpoints and historical landmarks.

Hiking Trails and the Bach-Pfad

Buchet has several well-developed hiking trails. These include sections associated with the Matthiasweg–Maas-Rhein-Weg and the Way of St. James. Other routes lead towards Schwarzer Mann on the Schneifel ridge. The Hemingway Trail is another local hiking option. There are various trails and directions to choose from, though each route requires its own navigation.

The Bach-Pfad is a circular trail in the NaturWanderPark delux that connects Halenfeld and Bleialf. The 14-kilometre loop starts and ends at the sports ground in Bleialf. It follows the Alfbach, Donsbach, Ihrenbach and Dürenbach streams and runs along the Belgian border for part of the way. Along the route, the trail crosses two rises and offers views across the Ardennes towards the High Fens. The Bach-Pfad is recognised as a premium trail with the German Hiking Seal and as a family-friendly circular route. Since trail conditions vary and certification details can change, check the starting point, trail markers and current certification status before setting out.

The Schneifel and Far-Reaching Views

The Three-Country Viewpoint near Buchet offers expansive views: from Bleialf and the Alfbach Valley across the Islek and Ösling regions to areas beyond the Our Valley. On a clear day, the view can reach as far as the High Fens in Belgium. Panoramic information panels identify visible landmarks, settlements and landscape features; benches offer a place to linger. Facilities may change. If the panels or seating are important for your visit, check the details in advance.

House Frames and St. Barbara’s Chapel

House Frames connects local history with events from the Second World War. In the second half of September 1944, the command staff of the 22nd Infantry Regiment of the 4th US Infantry Division was stationed there. Ernest Hemingway visited House Frames repeatedly as a war correspondent. A commemorative plaque recalls the connection with Hemingway.

St. Barbara’s Chapel is connected with Buchet’s mining history. Its floor plan and roof are modelled on a beech leaf. Saint Barbara is also part of this history: she was chosen as the patron saint of miners. The chapel thus adds a distinctive architectural element to the history of the village.

Getting Here and Choosing a Hotel

Buchet’s districts are connected to the regional road network via the K104 and K105; the municipality lies between two A60 motorway junctions. If you are travelling by car, these connections can help you plan your route. This lets you compare hotel offers along your actual travel plans.
