Discover Kruchten
Accommodation in Kruchten
Kruchten lies in the Southern Eifel Nature Park, amid gently rolling hills and dense forests. The surrounding area offers numerous hiking trails; Circular Hiking Trail 51 winds through this landscape. Alongside its natural setting, the area also bears traces of local architecture and history: St. Maximin Catholic Parish Church, with its medieval west tower, and the stories associated with the name Cruten and the hamlet of Neuafrika. This makes both hiking and local history central to planning your trip.
Circular Hiking Trail 51: a hike lasting several hours
The circular route is 14.6 kilometres long, rated moderate, and takes about three hours and 54 minutes. It starts and ends at the Kruchten-Schwarzenbruch hikers’ car park, opposite the riding stable. As this is a hike lasting several hours, allow for the time it will take when planning your days. Route details and access information may be updated, so it is advisable to check the route information before setting out.
The trail passes through dense forests and along natural paths. It also includes gravel, field and farm tracks, so the terrain changes along the way. Tall beech trees line the route, and the deciduous forest gives way to very dense coniferous forest. This sequence takes you through different types of woodland on a single loop.
A small stream runs alongside the trail. From the heights, clear-weather views extend across villages, hills and fields. You may also encounter red deer along the route; they are seen there relatively often, but wildlife sightings cannot be planned.
Local history between architecture and storytelling
Kruchten was first documented in 751 and 763 under the name Cruten. These two dates provide a specific historical anchor for the village. St. Maximin Catholic Parish Church adds an architectural feature to this historical perspective: its west tower is medieval.
The hamlet of Neuafrika is also associated with a story about an emigrant who never reached his destination. Unlike the dates 751 and 763, this is not a dated record of the name, but a story. Thus, two different approaches to the past meet in Kruchten: documented local history and a local emigration story.
