Neuerburg: Discover the Castle, Townscape and Enz Valley
Accommodation in Neuerburg
Neuerburg combines a castle complex with a historic townscape and trails leading to viewpoints above the town and the Enz Valley. When planning your trip, it is worth bearing in mind the different features: a visit to the castle courtyard and chapel may depend on local arrangements, while the via ferrata requires professional equipment. If you are looking for a hotel in Neuerburg, you can weigh up whether local history, scenic views or an active outing should take priority.
Castle and Historic Town Center
Neuerburg Castle is the largest surviving castle complex in the Bitburg-Prüm district. Visitors can explore the castle courtyard and chapel; the chapel was once a knights’ hall. As access may depend on local operations, check before your arrival whether these areas will be open at your planned time of visit.
The market square dates back to 1820 and is connected to narrow, winding lanes. Three chapels and numerous wayside shrines are located in the center and in the wooded outskirts of the town. Neuerburg’s historic character is reflected not only in the castle, but also in other places in the center and along the wooded edge of town.
Views and Trails
Neuerburg lies in the Enz Valley and is surrounded by wooded hills. The Kleine Kanzel and Große Kanzel viewpoints offer views of Neuerburg’s rooftops, the castle complex and the Enz Valley. The Neuer-Burg-Weg climbs over rocks and past old sessile oaks to viewpoints above the town. The Kanzeln offer sweeping views of the rooftops and castle, while the route of the Neuer-Burg-Weg takes you uphill over rocks and past sessile oaks.
Via Ferrata and Practical Information
The Neuerburg via ferrata opened in 2026. It is a 4.5-kilometer circular route with six climbing sections on rock faces and views over the town. Each climbing section can be bypassed, allowing hikers and climbing enthusiasts to enjoy the route together. Professional climbing equipment is required to use the via ferrata. Before setting out, check the route details, safety requirements and current options for bypassing the climbing sections.
Via ferrata equipment can be rented from the Tourist Information Office at Marktplatz 3. As availability and rental hours may change, contact the Tourist Information Office in advance to ask about current options.
Below the castle lies the town park, with green spaces, a pond, two small Enz waterfalls and a children’s playground. If you want to visit the park for a particular facility, check in advance whether it is currently available, as park facilities may change.
The free Lauschtour app provides access to audio walks, cycling tours and guided town tours in the area. App availability and content may change; check in advance which tours are currently offered.
Neuerburg has no direct rail connection; the nearest train station is Bitburg-Erdorf. If you are traveling by train, plan your onward journey from there and check the current connections.
