In Neef, hiking trails, Petersberg and a long local history offer a range of travel highlights. When looking for a hotel in Neef, you can first consider whether you mainly want to explore on foot, cycle, or discover historic buildings and traces of the past.

Circular Trails and the Moselsteig

Several circular hiking trails start at the Brunnenplatz by the banks of the Moselle. The four numbered routes vary in length:

  • N1: 14.2 km
  • N2: 10.3 km
  • N3: 10 km
  • N4: 8.6 km
  • A 6.5 km themed trail focuses on cultural monuments and biodiversity.

N1 is the longest of the listed routes. At 10.3 and 10 km, N2 and N3 are similar in length; N4 and the themed trail are shorter. This lets you compare the stated distances with the time available for your trip, without inferring walking times or difficulty levels from the distances alone.

Petersberg and Scenic Views

On Moselsteig Stage 16, the trail crosses Petersberg and passes the Petersberg Chapel. It then descends to Neef via vineyard paths or one of two steep stairways. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out. The Petersberg Chapel is considered to date from the 11th century; its altar reredos is a late Renaissance work from the mid-17th century.

The Eulenköpfchen viewpoint is on Petersberg above Neef. From there, panoramic views extend across the entire bend in the Moselle and Europe's steepest vineyards. The Petersberg ridge is described as being surrounded by the Moselle and as one of the scenic highlights of the Moselle Valley. Neef's Petersberg is considered a biodiversity hotspot along the Moselsteig route and is described as the site of the only active hillside cemetery on the Moselle.

Local History and Buildings

Traces of settlement from the Urnfield culture, dating to the 8th and 7th centuries BC, have been found in the town centre. Today's St. Matthias Church was consecrated in 1891. The historic village trail features historically significant relics and remarkable medieval buildings. These sites span different periods, from the archaeological finds in the town centre to medieval buildings and the 19th-century church.

The wine tradition also goes back a long way: following a donation in 623, Neef supplied wine to St. Arnulf in Metz for 500 years. The wider travel destination of Cochem-Zell is also home to Cochem Imperial Castle. In the 19th century, during the castle revival movement, Louis Ravené restored and rebuilt it in the Neo-Gothic style. Rooms open to visitors include the Knights' Hall, dining room, hunting room and ladies' chamber.

As conditions on the bridge and route can change, check them before setting out.

Local Speciality and Culture

The red vineyard peach is a Neef culinary speciality, enjoyed as a fruit, in preserves or as a liqueur. The nearby Stuben monastery ruins host cultural events such as jazz concerts and choir performances, as well as guided tours; the programme may vary.
