Idar-Oberstein brings together several themes related to gemstones and craftsmanship: a special exhibit at the German Mineral Museum, a visitor mine, an exhibition at the Historic Weiherschleife and the Bengelweg, which explores industrial history. There is also an activity at Kallwiesweiher and guided nature tours in the HunsrĂĽck-Hochwald National Park. When planning your stay, you can decide whether you want to focus on exhibitions, geology, history or outdoor activities.

Gemstones and craftsmanship

The German Mineral Museum displays one of the world's smallest cameos. The Steinkaulenberg Visitor Mine is the only gemstone mine in Europe open to visitors. The visitor mine also has a gemstone camp and a geological nature trail. Together, these offer different ways to explore gemstones: a special exhibit, a geological theme and a visitor mine.

The Bengelweg is a short themed trail exploring Oberstein's metalworking and jewellery industry from the early 20th century to the present day. It therefore has a different focus from the exhibitions and mining themes mentioned above: the emphasis is on the development of the industry over a long period. The Historic Weiherschleife adds a gemstone exhibition to the range of attractions. Pedal boating is also available at Kallwiesweiher. When choosing what to do, consider whether you would prefer to explore an exhibit, a geological nature trail, industrial history or an activity on the water.

Nature themes and guided tours

Ranger-led and themed tours are offered in the HunsrĂĽck-Hochwald National Park. They provide a distinct nature-focused option alongside the gemstone and industrial history attractions mentioned above. If you are deciding how to fit different themes into your stay, you can treat these tours as a nature activity and choose the exhibitions, visitor mine and Bengelweg according to their own subjects.

More themes in the wider Birkenfeld destination

The wider Birkenfeld destination offers more distinct cultural and nature themes. The Birkenfeld State Museum has permanent exhibitions on the Celts and Romans, Birkenfeld and the Wittelsbachs, ironworks in the Birkenfeld district, a historic classroom from around 1930, and the Oldenburg period. The Götterallee between Schwollen and Leisel is 2.5 kilometres long and features ten life-size, colourful figures of gods. The two cultural attractions differ in form: museum rooms with several exhibition themes versus an art trail featuring figures.

The nature trails in the wider Birkenfeld destination also have different focuses. The 1.6-kilometre National Park Island Trail around Börfink and Thranenweier uses information boards to introduce visitors to the rare and endangered arnica meadows, how they formed, their conservation and their biodiversity. The Upper Nahe Water Experience Trail in Hoppstädten-Weiersbach is one kilometre long and has four access points. Its themes include aquatic animals such as barbel and gudgeon, waterbirds such as kingfishers and dippers, and dragonfly species such as the common damselfly and the river dragonfly. In the Birkenfeld destination, you can therefore choose between interpreting a moorland landscape and exploring the diversity of the Upper Nahe.
