Allenbach: Nature, Trails and Industrial History
Accommodation in Allenbach
Allenbach combines nature experiences in the Hunsrück-Hochwald with visible traces of its industrial history. When planning your trip, the different trail profiles are particularly interesting: from the short circular trail at Allenbach Pond, via the themed “Between the Forests” Dream Loop, to the difficult cycling stage that ends in Allenbach.
Nature in the National Park and at the Pond
Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park covers 10,000 hectares of the Hunsrück uplands and is considered a biodiversity hotspot. Characteristic forests and a diverse range of wildlife and plant life shape the area. Allenbach borders the national park directly, which is accessible for exploring from Allenbach. The surrounding area also includes the Idarbach Valley nature trail and wooded Hunsrück landscapes. Six Dream Loops run directly through Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park.
Allenbach Pond is a biotope with approximately one hectare of water and around three hectares of natural area dedicated to conservation. The approximately one-kilometre loop around the pond is designed for use with strollers and wheelchairs. There are numerous places to sit and observe along the route. A water-treading pool is right beside it, and restroom facilities are available on site. As the facilities are maintained locally, check their condition before your visit if needed.
There is a clear boundary at the pond: boating, fishing and swimming are not permitted. The nature trail explains the diversity of local flora and fauna. This allows you to explore the pond both as a biotope and through its nature-related themes, while keeping the applicable conservation rules in mind.
Dream Loop and Cycling Stage
The “Between the Forests” Dream Loop starts at Allenbach Pond and passes the historic grain mill in Allenbach. The route also includes a section of the Idarbach Nature Trail. At Krahloch Geopark, stone exhibits and information boards introduce topics such as geology, rocks, mining and the natural surroundings. If you plan to take this route, check the latest route information before setting out, as local conditions may change.
The National Park Cycling Route Stage 1 has a different profile: it is rated difficult, is 55.5 kilometres long and has 949.1 metres of elevation gain. The stage ends in Allenbach and is intended for sporty e-bike riders. These figures differ considerably from the approximately one-kilometre loop around the pond; this is a challenging cycling tour rather than a short circular walk. Temporary diversions may affect the cycling route, so check route information before your ride.
Church, Castle and Industrial History
Allenbach’s simple Neoclassical church was completed in 1781. It houses a Stumm organ in the Empire style, dating from 1832 and equipped with one manual and twelve stops. Allenbach Castle is also a protected historic building. It can be visited as part of Open Monument Day; the event date varies, so check the date when making your plans.
The town’s history is closely linked to metalworking: from the Middle Ages until the end of the 19th century, Allenbach was an industrial centre. The old copper smelter is documented from 1400, and the new one from 1450. Remains of the former smelting site are still visible. Below Allenbach, the course of the former water channel can also be seen in the meadow landscape. These traces lend the landscape an additional historical dimension.
Getting to the Castle
Allenbach Castle can be reached by bus routes 800, 845 and 890 to the Allenbach stop; continue on foot from there. Check the timetable before travelling, as public transport information may change.
