Discover Wehlen
Accommodation in Wehlen
Wehlen offers several different points of interest for a stay: historic buildings, views of the Moselle and a distinctive local wine theme. Depending on your interests, you can choose a walk focused on architecture, spend time on the riverside promenade or explore the wine of Wehlener Sonnenuhr. In this way, architectural history, river views and wine stand alongside one another as distinct aspects of the town. The buildings also reflect different periods: the Kerpen House was built in 1614, and the suspension bridge opened to traffic in 1949.
Buildings and Their History
On a walk through Wehlen, you can include the richly decorated, well-preserved Kerpen House. It was built in 1614. The suspension bridge can also be part of a walk: it opened to traffic in 1949 and is the only suspension bridge on the Moselle. The house stands out for its design and state of preservation; the bridge is distinguished by its unique place on the Moselle. More than three centuries separate the construction of the house from the opening of the bridge to traffic.
You can include the suspension bridge in your visit from two different perspectives. On a walk through Wehlen, you can take in the bridge as a structure; from the riverside promenade, it is one of the sights. From there, you can also see the Moselle and the vineyards on the opposite bank. So you can either take in the bridge as part of a walk or view it from the riverside.
Riverside Promenade and Rose Avenue
The 1.5-kilometre riverside promenade is ideal for walking and relaxing. From there, you can see the Moselle, the vineyards on the opposite bank and the suspension bridge. The river, vineyards and bridge provide distinctive sights to enjoy during your time by the water. Rose Avenue is also part of the promenade; it has more than 100 rose bushes and adds a garden feature to the views. This means that sweeping vistas and an up-close detail of the landscaping come together along the promenade.
The route’s length gives you a clear measure for planning your walk. You can use the promenade as a walking route or plan to spend some time relaxing there.
Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Wine
Wehlener Sonnenuhr is a distinctive local wine landmark. Its wine can be sampled at wineries in Wehlen. This connects the wine experience from the named vineyard to the opportunity to taste its wine at a winery—a distinct point of interest alongside the buildings and the riverside promenade.
The wine’s availability and the operations of individual wineries may vary. If you plan to include a tasting, contact the winery directly in advance.
