Longkamp lies on the heights above the Moselle and stretches across a long plateau in the Hunsrück. The municipality covers 1,150 hectares; more than 87 percent is made up of woodland, arable land and meadows. These proportions give an impression of Longkamp’s rural character. If you’re looking for a hotel in Longkamp, consider whether hiking trails, open countryside or local history should play a greater role in your stay.

Hiking Trails and Countryside

Longkamp has an extensive network of local hiking trails; three circular routes start in the village center. Cycling and mountain biking are also among the leisure activities on offer. The Mühlenweg runs for 11.5 kilometers through the Mühlental along the Trabener Bach and past seven historic mills. Beech forest, open fields and views toward the Eifel characterize the route. The Mühlenweg includes shaded rest areas at Kaisergarten and a viewpoint overlooking the Kautenbachtal. Vegetation and visibility from the viewpoint can vary by season; check the condition of the rest areas before setting out. The route’s length also provides a concrete basis for planning your day.

The Hubertusweg runs through fields, meadows and pastures, with short stretches of woodland along the way. The Tiefenbach Tour follows the Tiefenbachtal, where the stream cuts through rock between Longkamp and Bernkastel-Kues. The landscapes along the trails therefore differ: the Mühlenweg focuses on the mill valley, stream and historic mills; the Hubertusweg on pastures and meadows; and the Tiefenbach Tour on the rocky stream valley.

Local History and Culture

Longkamp was first mentioned in a document in 1030. Evidence of a Roman settlement tradition includes archaeological finds from 1888 and 1889 in the hamlet of Furtflörchen; 15 burial mounds in the Bistum district are also considered evidence of Roman settlement. The first documentary mention and these archaeological traces thus represent distinct points of historical reference.

The local history museum preserves local traditions, history and customs and is housed in a former mill room and milling area. Access arrangements may vary, so check visiting options in advance. The Backes at the Heimatmuseum Barbaramühle can be rented for baking in the stone oven; arrange its use before your trip.

A 16.5-centimeter statue, found around 1912, is on display at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum and is interpreted as a Roman deity. If you’re planning a museum visit specifically to see this find, check the exhibition details beforehand. The Mali House provides information about Africa, particularly Mali; opening arrangements may vary, so check visiting options in advance.

The wayside chapel at the southern entrance to the village dates from 1775 or 1776 and contains three sandstone reliefs of the Passion. The votive chapel was built in 1892/93 in honor of Our Lady of Sorrows and was often the destination of a May candlelight procession.
