Odernheim am Glan: Trails, Wine Country and Local History
Accommodation in Odernheim am Glan
Odernheim am Glan lies where the Glan flows into the Nahe, in the Nahe wine-growing region. The valley is characterized by vineyards, forests and meadows. You can therefore shape your stay around the landscape, trails or local history: hiking options, two cycling routes and canoeing on the Glan are available around the town, alongside historic buildings.
Hiking trails through the landscape
Hiking options around Odernheim include the Hildegard von Bingen Pilgrim Trail, the Humberg Tour and the Orchid Trail. Natural streams, flower-filled forest meadows and abandoned vineyards characterize the routes described; orchids and sweeping views are also part of the landscape. The three route names give you a specific starting point for planning. Before setting out, check whether your chosen route is available.
Cycling and canoeing
Cyclists can connect with the Nahe Cycle Route and the Glan-Blies Cycle Route. The latter reaches the point at Odernheim where the Glan flows into the Nahe. Canoeing on the Glan is offered as a half-day or full-day activity. The options therefore differ in how they are planned: for cycling, the two named routes are the reference points, while canoeing is available as either a half-day or full-day outing. Check the route conditions in advance and find out whether equipment can be rented and how canoeing is organized.
Historic traces in Odernheim
Visible remains of the former town wall have been preserved in the townscape. The town hall dates from 1541 and contains a bell from Disibodenberg Abbey. The Zweibrücker Schlösschen is located near the Obertor. The bell provides a specific link to the abbey; the town wall and the small castle are other historic landmarks in the town. Together with the river landscape, these buildings give your stay a second focus alongside outdoor activities.
Odernheim is also a convenient base for exploring the Nahe and Glan landscapes. The region offers cycling, fishing, hiking and canoeing, as well as access to the ruins of Disibodenberg. You can choose between the historic sites in town and a stay focused on the two landscapes and the activities they offer.
Bad Kreuznach: Bridge Houses and Culture
The Bridge Houses in Bad Kreuznach were built from 1480 onward due to a lack of space. The half-timbered buildings stand on pillars of the old Nahe bridge, which was built around 1300. The bridge and the houses therefore date from different periods: the bridge is older, and the houses were built later on its pillars. Since 1985/86, the museums of the city of Bad Kreuznach have been housed in the listed former Bangert manor house, set in a historic park.
In Bretzenheim lies the Felseneremitage, a place of worship carved entirely into the rock. It probably dates back to prehistoric times and was repurposed in the early Christian period. It can be viewed from the outside year-round without a guided tour; entry to the rock dwelling is currently not possible due to a rockfall.
