Kettenheim lies on the southern slope of the Wartberg in the valley of the Weidasser Bach. Anyone planning a stay focused on local history and cycling will find various points of interest here: the village centre, the Wiesenmühle and connections for cycling tours. When choosing a hotel in Kettenheim, it is particularly useful to consider whether you would like to focus on local history or cycling.

Landscape and cycling connections

The municipal area covers 320 hectares, around 30 hectares of which are vineyards. These figures refer to Kettenheim’s municipal area; the village centre is characterised by the town hall, church, newly redesigned square and adjoining buildings. Around one tenth of the total municipal area is given over to vineyards.

Cycling routes connect Kettenheim with Esselborn and Wahlheim. Separate from these is the signposted Mühlenradweg from Alzey, which runs through Kettenheim’s municipal area. The information therefore describes both connections to two towns and the route of a signposted trail through the municipal area. Road connections are available to the B 271 and the A 61 and A 63 motorways.

Village centre and history

The town hall, Protestant church, newly redesigned square and adjoining buildings stand together in the historic village centre. The town hall is more than 300 years old and is regarded as one of the most beautiful half-timbered houses in the region. The church reflects several building phases: its Romanesque chancel tower was raised in 1575; a new nave was added in 1816, using materials from Weidas Monastery.

The chancel tower is the tower at the chancel end of the church. Its raising and the nave added later make the different building phases of one structure tangible. The village’s history reaches further back, too: finds of clay and bronze graves provide evidence of prehistoric settlement in Kettenheim. Archaeological traces thus stand alongside the historic buildings of the village centre.

Experience the Wiesenmühle

The Wiesenmühle was first mentioned in 1738. The four-winged complex consists of rubble-stone and half-timbered buildings; historic mill equipment has been preserved there. The combination of building styles and surviving machinery offers insight into the mill’s former use.

Mill visits with explanations of the technology are offered. A tour of the old mill building provides a vivid insight into the miller’s craft. Check the arrangements for visits and the tour’s availability in advance. The guesthouse also houses an exhibition on the history of the Wiesenmühle; confirm access before your visit.

Mathis' Wein-Café has been at the Wiesenmühle since 2022. Check its current operating status and opening hours before travelling. The Wiesenmühle can also be used for celebrations in a historic setting; check the booking conditions in advance.
