Wimbach: Landscape, Local History and the Nürburgring
Accommodation in Wimbach
Wimbach lies on a slope, surrounded by forests and meadows. At the same time, the village is in the immediate vicinity of the Nürburgring. Motorsport, hiking and cycling are among the leisure activities in and around Wimbach. When planning a trip, you can give these interests different priorities: the Müllenwirft Loop showcases the landscape, while the proximity to the Nürburgring gives the area its motorsport connection.
Landscape and the Müllenwirft Loop
The Müllenwirft Loop starts at the Hubertushütte hiking car park in Wimbach. It crosses a landscape of meadows and forests that, as a natural and cultural landscape, forms part of the large-scale Obere Ahr-Hocheifel nature conservation project. The route is marked throughout with its route logo. This lets you take the landscape, starting point and a key feature of the trail into account together when planning.
The loop reaches the Kottenborner Schweiz ridge, which offers a particularly fine panoramic view. A 4.2-kilometre section descends alongside the Wirftbach to the Kottenborner Mühle. This gives you both a viewpoint and a precisely described stretch of stream to enjoy along the route. The Barweiler Mühle also offers a place to stop for refreshments along the loop. Check before visiting whether this is available on your chosen date.
Motorsport and local connections
Wimbach’s immediate proximity to the Nürburgring gives it a strong connection to motorsport. A section of the Nürburgring Nordschleife is also associated with the village. Hiking and cycling offer different leisure perspectives in and around Wimbach. When choosing your destination, you can therefore distinguish between motorsport interests and outdoor activities without treating these different focuses as equivalent.
The Schwedenkreuz stands beside the Nordschleife on Wimbach municipal territory and dates from 1638. Its location connects a historic landmark with the motorsport setting. The village’s history has an earlier date, too: Wimbach was first mentioned in a document belonging to Count Gerhard of Are/Nürburg on 25 May 1216.
History and accommodation
The settlement is also associated with a former noble residence. The first documented mention, with its exact date, and the connection to the former estate offer two different points of reference for Wimbach’s history. Together with the Schwedenkreuz, which dates from 1638, these historical connections span the period from the medieval reference to a specific site in today’s municipality.
Accommodation options in Wimbach include holiday apartments and holiday rooms. If you are looking for a hotel, consider these as separate alternatives rather than hotel categories. Check the availability of the accommodation you are considering before your trip.
Bus connection
Bus route 881 connects Adenau Markt, Wimbach Gemeindehaus and Kottenborn. If you are planning to use this connection for your arrival or onward journey, check the current timetable before travelling. This will let you plan around the service operating at the time of your trip.
