Accommodation in Altenahr
Are Castle makes Altenahr a destination for exploring medieval architecture and enjoying scenic views. The Mayschoß-Altenahr winegrowers’ cooperative’s wine shop is a place to buy wine in Altenahr. The wider Ahrweiler destination offers additional cultural and walking opportunities.
Are Castle: Ruins and Views
Are Castle is a medieval complex of ruins on a hill above Altenahr. The remains of the outer ward, defensive wall, gate tower, palas, gate complex and castle chapel have been preserved. The restored well is open to visitors. A palas is the main building of a castle; the outer ward is an outlying part of the complex.
Visitors can climb to the highest point of the castle plateau. From there, the view stretches across Altenahr, the Ahr River and the vineyards. Regular historical guided tours add to the visitor experience; check their availability before your trip. The viewpoint and guided tour offer different perspectives: from the plateau, the focus is on the landscape, while a guided tour focuses on history. This lets you plan your visit according to your interests.
Wine Shop in Altenahr
The Mayschoß-Altenahr winegrowers’ cooperative’s wine shop offers a place to buy wine in Altenahr. This is a different kind of visit from the castle: here, buying wine is the main focus, while Are Castle brings together historic structures, a well and scenic views. Check opening information before visiting, as it may change.
Culture and Walking Routes in the Wider Ahrweiler Destination
The Ahrweiler Shooting Club House in Ahrweiler displays art-historical treasures from the past three centuries. These include uniforms, visual documentation and historic shooting rifles. The focus here is on art-historical objects, unlike Are Castle, with its medieval complex and views.
Visitors to the Roman Villa at Silberberg in Ahrweiler can view a model of a Roman estate and watch an audiovisual presentation. The model and presentation offer a different way to explore the subject of Roman estates from the preserved structures that shape a visit to Are Castle.
The Ahrweiler District Archive is a local history information and advisory centre for historical and local-history questions about the region. It complements the visitor attractions mentioned above with a place to ask questions about regional history.
The wider Ahrweiler destination also offers walking and cycling routes across the district. The certified hiking trails Rheinburgenweg, Eifelleiter and AhrSteig are located in Ahrweiler district; the Red Wine Hiking Trail and numerous marked local trails add to the hiking network there. For cyclists, Ahrweiler district highlights the Rhine Cycle Route and the Ahr Cycle Route. For easy reference, the information can be grouped by activity: certified routes and local trails for walking, and two named cycle routes for cycling.
