Reifferscheid: St. Michael and its architectural history
Accommodation in Reifferscheid
The parish church of St. Michael offers a tangible point of reference for Reifferscheid’s architectural history. It brings together a newly constructed church, surviving older structural elements and later alterations. The sequence is particularly revealing: the 19th-century Neo-Gothic design and the older construction method, made visible again during a later renovation, belong to different chapters in the history of the same church.
St. Michael: Architectural History and Visible Details
The church was rebuilt from 1893 to 1895 to plans by architect Lambert von Fisenne. The lower part of the tower was retained; the church was consecrated in 1896. An older structural element thus stands alongside the Neo-Gothic redesign of the late 19th century.
During the 1971–1973 renovation, the supporting central columns were removed, leaving the old construction principle visible. As a result, the ribbed vaults seem to float above the nave. The former choir, with its Neo-Gothic altar, was also preserved and now serves as a sacrament chapel. The renovation therefore changed more than just the supports in the nave: it also brought the form of the vaults into view and preserved an earlier part of the church interior for a new purpose.
Three building periods can be distinguished at St. Michael: the Gothic tower shaft, Fisenne’s Neo-Gothic church and later additions. The restored original paintwork is also still visible. Both structural elements from different periods and the preserved color scheme shape the impression of the church. This combination is particularly revealing from an architectural-history perspective: St. Michael cannot be reduced to the Neo-Gothic reconstruction, but displays several layers of its architectural history.
Culture in the Wider Ahrweiler Destination
In the wider Ahrweiler destination, the Haus der Schützen in Ahrweiler showcases art-historical treasures from the past three centuries. These include uniforms, photographic documentation and historic marksmen’s rifles. Ahrweiler’s three marksmen’s societies have operated a museum since 2002; visits are by appointment.
The Roman Villa at Silberberg in Ahrweiler offers another way to explore the region’s history. Visitors can view a model of the Roman country estate and attend an audiovisual presentation. For historical and local-history inquiries about the region, the Ahrweiler District Archives provides information and advice. The wider Ahrweiler destination thus offers a range of places to explore architectural, regional and Roman history.
Hiking and Cycling Routes in Ahrweiler District
The routes should also be considered at district level: the certified hiking trails Rheinburgenweg, Eifelleiter and AhrSteig are located in Ahrweiler District. The Rotweinwanderweg and numerous marked municipal trails complement the district’s hiking network. These route details refer to Ahrweiler District; they do not describe routes through Reifferscheid.
For cycling tourists, Ahrweiler District particularly promotes the Rhine Cycle Route and the Ahr Cycle Route. Hiking and cycling are therefore distinct themes within the wider Ahrweiler destination: on the one hand are certified and marked hiking trails, and on the other are two cycle routes highlighted by the district in its information for cycling tourists.
