Sierscheid: Hiking the AhrSteig and village history
Accommodation in Sierscheid
Sierscheid combines hiking trails with the character of an Eifel village. It lies in the northern Eifel at an elevation of about 400 metres. Fields surround it on three sides, while an extensive forest begins to the north. When planning your hike, choosing a route is particularly helpful: the Panorama Trail around Dümpelhardt is just under three kilometres long; the fourth stage of the AhrSteig covers 17.4 kilometres.
Hiking around Sierscheid
The AhrSteig runs from Insul past Sierscheid via Dümpelhardt to Liers. Stage 4 goes from Insul via Sierscheid, Dümpelhardt, Liers and Linder Höhe to Kreuzberg. It is marked in both directions with the blue AhrSteig logo. In total, the AhrSteig is a route of around 100 kilometres, from the source of the Ahr to its mouth. From Sierscheid, the trail descends either towards Schuld or towards Liers and the Ahr.
On Stage 4, the route passes sparse heathland as it climbs towards Dümpelhardt, then continues through meadows and forests into the Liersbach valley. The Panorama Trail around Dümpelhardt offers a considerably shorter alternative: it is just under three kilometres long and easy to walk. It starts at the wayside cross above the Maternus Chapel in Sierscheid. From Dümpelhardt, panoramic views extend across Eifel meadows and forests down into the upper Ahr valley; the Panorama Trail also offers views of the Nürburg.
The distances illustrate the difference between the two hiking options: a short Panorama Trail on the one hand and a 17.4-kilometre stage on the other. The Ahr lies below Sierscheid and can be reached on foot from the village. This makes it easy to decide whether you would like to explore the Panorama Trail or take on a longer section of the AhrSteig.
Village, chapel and history
Sierscheid is a well-preserved clustered village with characteristic farmsteads. By the end of 2016, almost all of these complexes had been renovated according to heritage conservation standards. The Maternus Chapel is a simple, single-nave building, first constructed around 1730. Later renovations also included work in 2024. The chapel and farmsteads offer different historical points of reference: the sacred building and the agricultural properties characteristic of the village.
Sierscheid was first mentioned in a document in 1290 as belonging to the Electoral Cologne district of Nürburg. This early mention and the surviving architectural forms reveal two different aspects of the village’s history: its recorded administrative affiliation and the visible structure of the clustered village. During your stay, you can combine these details with the hiking trails without reducing the village’s history to a single attraction.
Traditions throughout the year
Local traditions include a St Martin’s procession, a St Martin’s bonfire and the raising of a maypole in May. The village festival is traditionally celebrated on the third weekend in September. These customs mark different points in the year: the maypole belongs to May, while the procession and bonfire are part of the St Martin’s traditions. If you would like to time your visit to coincide with a festival, check the specific event dates for your travel year.
