Hiking and local character

The Dörferblick Loop makes hiking the main focus in Pomster: this moderately difficult circular trail is 14 kilometers long and runs around Pomster and Barweiler. Along the way, stream valleys, woods, meadows, and ridges alternate; the route lies within the Obere Ahr-Hocheifel nature project. The trail also involves 338 meters of ascent and descent. Together, the distance, difficulty level, and elevation profile provide a basis for planning: you can compare the scope of the loop with the time and effort you have planned for your hiking day, rather than looking only at the number of kilometers.

The trail also passes through Pomster, connecting the landscape with the village’s local character. A small historic chapel, along with traditional quarry-stone and half-timbered houses, are among the route’s features. The chapel and the different building styles provide a change of scene from the stream valleys, meadows, and ridges. In this way, both natural sections and the built environment contribute to the impressions along the circular hike.

After heavy rain, trail conditions may change, especially at the Wenigbach crossing. If there has been heavy rain beforehand, check conditions at this point before setting out.

Getting there and accessing the loop

Pomster is on bus route 884, which connects the village with Adenau, Wiesemscheid, Barweiler, Wirft, Kirmutscheid, Hoffeld, and Nohn. There is also an access point for the Dörferblick Loop in Pomster. When planning to combine the bus and the circular trail, consider the bus connection and the access point as two useful reference points. Check the timetable before travelling, as public transport schedules can change, and coordinate your arrival with your planned hike.

Culture and trails in the wider Ahrweiler destination

The wider Ahrweiler destination offers other cultural attractions. In Ahrweiler, the Haus der Schützen displays art-historical treasures from the past three centuries, including uniforms, photographic documentation, and historic marksmen’s rifles. At the Roman Villa on Silberberg in Ahrweiler, you can see a model of the Roman estate and watch an audiovisual presentation. The Ahrweiler District Archive serves as a local history information and advisory center for historical and regional heritage questions. These places each have a different focus: collection pieces related to the history of the marksmen’s associations, a Roman estate presented through a model and talk, and historical and local heritage advice.

Hiking and cycling routes are also found throughout the district. The certified hiking trails Rheinburgenweg, Eifelleiter, and AhrSteig are located in Ahrweiler District. The network is complemented by the Rotweinwanderweg and numerous marked local trails. With the Rheinradweg and Ahrradweg, Ahrweiler District particularly appeals to cycling tourists. This brings two scales together: the Dörferblick Loop, which runs specifically around Pomster and Barweiler, and the hiking and cycling trails found throughout Ahrweiler District.
