Sonsbeck reveals itself through distinctive landscapes, geological trails and a rich pottery history. At DĂĽrsberg, views and the educational trail take center stage; historic buildings, museums and artworks add further highlights. This allows you to include a range of themes in your travel plans while distinguishing which trails, views and cultural sites are the focus.

Landscape, Views and Trails

The Sonsbeck Switzerland is part of the Lower Rhine Heights and reaches 87.20 meters above sea level. Meadows, fields and partly wooded hills characterize the area, which is designated as a local recreation area. The observation tower on DĂĽrsberg offers far-reaching views across large parts of the Lower Rhine region. The 26-meter-high tower is made of steel and wood and serves as a prominent landmark in the landscape.

The Geological Hiking Trail runs from the Roman Tower to the observation tower. It is 1.2 kilometers long and has six information stations. Its length, endpoints and number of stations make it easy to assess the route without confusing it with a longer tour. The Erratic Boulder Trail complements the Geological Hiking Trail to form a circular route. It focuses on erratic boulders found in gravel pits along the Lower Rhine. The two trail names therefore refer to different geological themes: the educational trail and its stations, and the erratic boulders along the circular route.

Another themed site on Sonsbeck’s Dürsberg is the KlimaWaldErlebnis educational trail. It includes the Die KlimaWaldMeister educational program. As program details may change, it is best to check them before your visit. The Roman Water Sources Loop is also worth considering for cycling: it is a themed circuit on the Roman Lippe Route.

Pottery History and Local Landmarks

The pottery tradition reaches far back into Sonsbeck’s history: 90 potteries operated here between 1649 and 1903. Their products included stoneware, relief panels, tiles, jugs and decorative bowls. The Gommansche Mill houses an exhibition on Sonsbeck’s pottery history; since 1992, the mill has been used as a cultural meeting place. Those wishing to compare ceramics with other art forms can also explore several perspectives at the Tietz Ceramics Museum: it focuses on Lower Rhine ceramics and also displays paintings and bronze sculptures by local artists.

The Roman Tower is a round brick tower dating from the early 15th century. It formerly served as the tower of a territorial ruler’s mill. Its historic function distinguishes it from the observation tower on Dürsberg, which, at 26 meters tall and offering panoramic views, is a different destination on the Geological Hiking Trail. St. Gerebernus Chapel is associated with Sonsbeck’s historic town center. A fortified guard post dating from Roman times is located nearby.

The Pig Market Fountain offers a distinctive subject: it depicts a sow with three piglets, whose heads, ears, legs and curly tails are movable. The fountain is considered the largest of its kind in Germany north of the Main line. The moving figures and the stated size give the artwork two distinct features to look for when viewing it.

Getting Around on Your Trip

NIAG bus route 36 connects Sonsbeck with the train stations in Geldern and Xanten. If you plan to use the bus to get here or as part of your onward travel, check the current timetable in advance, as routes and times may change. There is also an e-bike charging station in the town center. As charging infrastructure availability may change, it is advisable to check before setting out.

You can choose from a range of activities to suit your interests: views and geological themes on DĂĽrsberg, trails with stated lengths and information stations, or the history of pottery and historic buildings. The museums add further perspectives on ceramics and art. This makes it easy to plan your stay in Sonsbeck around the topics that interest you most.
