Schermbeck is a state-recognized health resort in the Hohe Mark Nature Park. Its natural surroundings, cycling routes and historic buildings offer different sides of the town for you to discover during your stay.

Nature and trails in the Hohe Mark

The Lichtenhagen nature reserve is close to the town center. It includes many biotopes and ponds that attract rare bird species, and is also home to remarkable plants. On walks through Schermbeck’s landscapes, you can also observe wildlife and insects.

Dämmerwald, Üfter Mark and Loosen Berge offer hiking trails for longer outings in the Hohe Mark Nature Park. For a different kind of walk, the Neue Wildnis Dämmerwald adventure trail is 2.6 kilometers long and around eight kilometers from the Schermbeck Tourist Information area. The length given refers to the trail, while the approximate distance refers to the Tourist Information area.

Cycling and comparing route lengths

Schermbeck participates in the ADFC Bed+Bike program for cycle-friendly accommodation. Check the program status before your trip. Two routes offer different distances for planning your rides: the Hohe Mark loop is a cycling circuit of around 45 kilometers in the Hohe Mark Nature Park. The Lippe Cycle Path covers around 25 kilometers within the municipality of Schermbeck. This makes the loop almost twice as long as the stated section of the Lippe Cycle Path. Clay and historic buildings

Historically, Schermbeck was known as the source of high-quality clay roof tiles. A two-hour guided walk traces the journey of the clay, from the material in the ground to the finished tile. This experience focuses on how the material is processed.

The Schermbeck Local History Museum is housed in a former cottage farmhouse. The timber dates the building to after 1566; it is considered the oldest surviving residential building in the town center. In Schermbeck, you can therefore discover both a historic connection to clay processing and a specific example of historic architecture in the town center.

Guided experiences and special places to visit

Family tours and discovery walks for children accompanied by their parents are available in Lichtenhagen by prior arrangement. The walks last around two and a half hours. Arrange a date and check availability before your trip. You can also explore Schermbeck with nature park and landscape guides.

Archehof Lühlerheide is a refuge for rare animals whose populations are threatened. It is also a stop directly on the Hohe Mark Steig trail. The farm has a café, farm shop, garden and play area. As visitor offerings may change, check what is currently available before visiting.
