Bad Waldliesborn: Spa Park, Brine History and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Bad Waldliesborn
Bad Waldliesborn combines a large spa park with the history of its brine spring, church art, and cycling routes. You’ll find a variety of things to explore during your stay—from walks among old and exotic trees to historical details and a longer cycling tour.
Spa Park: Trees, Art and Activities
The 20-hectare spa park offers walks beneath old and exotic trees. Along the tree discovery trail, 15 stops introduce native and exotic tree species. The park also regularly offers themed tours exploring its botanical diversity. The stops and tours highlight different aspects: the trail focuses on individual tree species, while the tours explore the park’s botanical diversity.
Art and leisure activities are also part of the park. There are sculptures, several playgrounds, and a mini-golf course; concerts and other events take place in summer. Visitors can also explore the park on the “Walibo” Express. Another highlight is the mist path: nozzles built into tall metal columns spray a fine mist of water beneath the tree canopy. It provides a cool respite during walks and makes the path a destination in its own right during a visit to the park.
Brine History and Church Art
Brine spring I was discovered in 1900 at a depth of 912 metres during drilling for coal. The Solequelle 1 pump house marks the site of the discovery. For your travel plans, it’s important to know that since the Walibo thermal baths closed, Bad Waldliesborn’s brine is currently unavailable for treatments. Check before your visit to see whether the situation has changed.
St. Joseph’s Church offers another historical detail. Bishop Dr Johannes Poggenburg consecrated it on 30 April 1930. Inside is a Renaissance pulpit carved from wood, dating from 1557 and originally from Liesborn Abbey. The church’s consecration date, the pulpit’s style, and its origins each offer a distinct point of reference for local and art history.
Cycling Routes, Tours and Events
The “Around Bad Waldliesborn” cycling route is 25 kilometres long, easy, and follows flat terrain through varied countryside. The Kurbadweg L3 offers a different connection: it links Lippstadt’s historic centre with Bad Waldliesborn, reaches the town centre here, and then continues to the spa park. This distinguishes the clearly measured cycling route over flat terrain from the route described between Lippstadt, the town centre, and the park.
For a guided look at the spa park, join the “Sculpture Tour in Bad Waldliesborn.” It introduces the bronze figures there, created by Sendenhorst artist Bernhard Kleinhans. Confirm availability before your trip. The “Town Tour in Bad Waldliesborn” covers the history of the spa town and the park. It lasts around 90 minutes, is designed for groups of up to 25 people, and costs 58 euros; here, too, you should check availability in advance.
The annual May Festival is a chance to discover arts and crafts, listen to live music, and enjoy a wide range of food and drink. Since the exact dates vary from year to year, check the date for your travel year if you’re planning your stay around the festival.
