Freudenberg brings together several themes to help you plan your trip: the Old Town, local history and art, the history of technology, an open-air theatre and trails through the forest landscape. These features of the town can help you turn your decision into specific plans for your visit.

The Old Town and local history

The Old Town is considered one of Westphalia’s most architecturally significant historic town centres and an internationally recognised monument. From the spa gardens, you can enjoy a postcard-perfect view of more than 80 black-and-white buildings in the Old Town. You can take in the historic centre as a whole or admire the buildings from the perspective of the spa gardens.

The Protestant town church also offers insights into Freudenberg’s architectural history. Its tower originally belonged to a castle. The church preserves historic features dating from its restoration after 1666: old timberwork, the roof structure, a Baroque tower dome, part of the historic bell frame and a bell from 1669. In addition to the tower’s former role as part of a castle, several structural features and the bell bear traces of the town’s later history.

Museums and open-air theatre

The 4Fachwerk Mittendrin Museum presents art exhibitions, clocks and local history. The Freudenberg Museum of Technology has a different focus: it is dedicated to economic and industrial history, with a steam engine from 1904 at its centre. The museum also documents the former local glue, leather and felt industries. During guided tours, working model steam engines, the large steam engine and the machine workshop are demonstrated. A tour usually lasts about 75 minutes. Check the current arrangements in advance if you are planning a tour.

The South Westphalian Open-Air Theatre Freudenberg stages two new productions each year for children and adults. Performances take place against a woodland and rocky backdrop. Performance seasons may vary, so check the current programme and dates before your trip. This lets you factor a theatre visit into your schedule.

Forest trails and landscape

Freudenberg has 160 kilometres of marked forest hiking trails. Numerous hiking and cycling routes around Freudenberg also invite you to explore the region. The town lies amid green forests and meadows, providing a setting for outdoor activities. If you are planning a hike, check current trail conditions in advance.

Getting there and planning

The Freudenberg Museum of Technology is about 100 metres from a bus stop, with regular connections from there to Siegen and Betzdorf. Nearby, routes R37, R38 and 290 serve the Siegener StraĂźe and Olper StraĂźe stops. As route numbers may change, check current connections before travelling.

The Museum of Technology has two accessible parking spaces, a step-free entrance and an accessible toilet. If you rely on these facilities, confirm their current status before travelling.

The attractions differ in how much time you need to allow: for the open-air theatre, the varying performance dates are important, while a guided tour of the Museum of Technology usually takes about 75 minutes. For a hike, current trail conditions are a factor. So first check the dates that are fixed for your trip, then plan your other activities around them.
