Bad Berleburg brings together a historic Old Town with a castle, park, Fairy Tale Trail and cycling themes. If you are looking for a hotel in Bad Berleburg, the area’s different highlights can help shape your travel plans, whether you are interested in architectural and cultural history, a family hike or a cycling tour.

Historic Old Town and Castle

The historic town centre includes Berleburg Castle, the Orangery, the adjoining park and half-timbered houses with slate roofs in the upper town. Berleburg Castle is the focal point of the historic Old Town. The castle park and a visit to the historic town can be combined in a walk. As you plan, you can decide whether to focus on the buildings, the park or a combination of the two.

The castle displays portraits of the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg family alongside weapons, hunting equipment and trophies. Its furnishings and collection also include uniforms, porcelain, engraved glass, stucco ceilings and furniture. Family portraits and hunting-related objects are thus displayed alongside furnishings. The castle park covers about 12 hectares and was laid out in the first half of the 18th century.

The Park and Seasonal Use

At the western end of the Cross Garden in the castle park is a Baroque summerhouse. It was used by the princely family for summer celebrations and provided shelter for citrus and orange trees in winter. Its use therefore changed with the seasons: celebrations were held there in summer, while plants were sheltered there in winter.

Exhibitions and a Family Trail

The visitor centre of the Sauerland Rothaargebirge Nature Park and the Wisent-Welt-Wittgenstein exhibition are located in the BĂĽrgerhaus on the market square. As exhibition displays may change, check the latest information before visiting.

The Fairy Tale Trail combines a family hike with a fairy-tale quiz at six stops. A reward can be collected from the Tourist Information office. Quiz materials and rewards may change, so check for the latest information beforehand if needed. The Tourist Information office also offers free visitor advice and sells hiking maps. Services and map availability may also change.

Cycling Route and Wisent Theme

The “Strong Landscape – Strong Animals” cycling loop is about 40 kilometres long. It follows the Eder Cycle Route through forests, meadows and small settlements; a detour leads to the Wisent Wilderness on the Rothaarsteig. Route conditions and access to the attraction may change, so it is advisable to check before setting out.

The Wisent Wilderness on the Rothaarsteig near Wingeshausen is associated with a nature conservation project considered unique in Western Europe. Check current access arrangements before planning a visit.

Woodworking in Girkhausen

The Drehkoite in Girkhausen is an old woodworking workshop associated with traditional bowl turning and historical woodworking techniques. Opening arrangements may vary by season. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening arrangements beforehand.
