Discover Brühl: Tours, Gardens and Culture
Accommodation in Brühl
Brühl offers several distinct starting points for planning a stay: tours, the gardens of Augustusburg Palace and other named experiences. When choosing a hotel, you can first decide whether you want to focus on tours, the gardens and the UNESCO World Heritage Site, or consider other leisure activities.
Routes in different formats
Brühl is directly connected to the Radregion Rheinland’s excellent signposted network of cycle routes. Three specific tour formats offer different experiences: the Book Route and the Art Walk are Actionbound experiences, while the Mill Tour is a circular walking route. You can therefore start by choosing between the cycle network and the individual tours described here.
The Brühl Book Route is a 10.8-kilometre Actionbound experience that connects book-exchange cabinets around Brühl. It shares interesting facts about the history of the city’s districts and includes audio tracks and puzzles. It can be flexibly divided into three stages of three kilometres each. Book locations, district history and interactive activities define the character of this route.
The Mill Tour offers a different route format: this circular walking route is about 12 kilometres long, passes through Brühl and starts and ends in the palace park. At about 12 kilometres and 10.8 kilometres respectively, the two tours are of a similar length, although their formats differ. One is a loop starting and ending in the palace park; the other is an experience tour that can be flexibly divided into stages.
The Brühl Art Walk is an interactive, 3.1-kilometre Actionbound art tour through the historic town centre. It starts at the “Brühl-Mitte” stop in the direction of Bonn. Compared with the tours of about 12 and 10.8 kilometres, it is considerably shorter. Its focus on art and route through the historic town centre offer a third option when choosing a tour format.
Gardens, UNESCO World Heritage and special experiences
The gardens of Augustusburg Palace are among the few gardens in Europe to have been restored to their original design. Augustusburg Palace in Brühl has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, together with Falkenlust Palace and the Brühl Gardens. This theme adds a different focus to travel planning than the route options: the restored gardens and the shared World Heritage status of these places take centre stage.
Other named experiences include the GPS treasure hunt at Kletterwald Schwindelfrei and the Adventure Trail in Phantasialand’s Deep in Africa themed area. A booking request is required for the GPS treasure hunt. Keep this requirement in mind if you include the treasure hunt in your plans.
More regional highlights in the Rhein-Erft district
Beyond Brühl, you can explore the wider travel destination of the Rhein-Erft district. Leisure activities there include hiking, cycling and water sports; there is also a dedicated Water Castles Route for cycling. Attractions in the Rhein-Erft district include palaces, castles, museums and historic mills. As part of the Rhineland Bay, the district is one of Germany’s regions with the most water castles.
The region’s cultural and natural attractions also vary considerably: at the BERGHEIMAT Museum, the history of Bergheim is brought to life through listening and activity stations, as well as a small museum cinema; the museum hosts permanent and temporary exhibitions. The Friesheimer Busch Environmental and Nature Park Centre is located in the forest of the same name in Erftstadt and offers practical and theoretical nature conservation work, as well as education for sustainable development.
