Discover the Rhein-Erft District
Accommodation in Rhein-Erft District
Castles, fortresses, museums, and historic mills give the Rhein-Erft District a distinctive cultural and historical character. At the same time, hiking, cycling, and water sports are among the leisure activities available in the district. When planning your trip, you can take cultural heritage and architectural history into account alongside time outdoors. As part of the Cologne Lowland, the Rhein-Erft District is one of Germany’s regions with the most moated castles.
Distinctive Castles and Museums
Since 1984, Augustusburg Palace in Brühl, together with Falkenlust Palace and the Brühl Gardens, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the level of the broader travel destination of North Rhine-Westphalia, Augustusburg Palace and Falkenlust Hunting Lodge in Brühl are also among the earliest and most significant examples of 18th-century Rococo architecture in Germany. A look at Brühl thus takes in both the World Heritage status of the joint site and the castles’ distinctive place in architectural history.
In Bergheim, the town’s history is brought to life and presented in a multifaceted way at the BERGHEIMAT Museum, using audio and interactive stations as well as a small museum cinema. Permanent and temporary exhibitions are both part of the museum’s concept. In Frechen, the focus shifts: the KERAMION houses collections of modern and historic ceramics. By comparison, one museum focuses on the history of Bergheim, while the other is centered on ceramics as a collection theme.
Nature, Education, and Hands-On Activities
The Friesheimer Busch Environmental and Nature Park Center is located in the Friesheimer Busch woodland in Erftstadt. Its offerings include both practical and theoretical nature conservation work, as well as education for sustainable development. The focus combines hands-on conservation work with teaching about sustainable development. You can also explore the Erftaue landscape park on a walk from the Gymnicher MĂĽhle Nature Park Center.
There is also a hands-on baking activity at Gymnicher MĂĽhle: course participants can use professional bakery equipment and shape their own small baked creations at the teaching bakery at the Gymnicher MĂĽhle Nature Park Center. This activity is for course participants. It differs from a walk through the Erftaue: here, shaping and baking your own creations is the focus.
Cycling, Hiking, and Water
Leisure activities in the Rhein-Erft District include hiking, cycling, and water sports. Cyclists can consider including a specially designated Moated Castles Route in their plans; it complements general cycling opportunities with a route specifically devoted to moated castles. Hiking and water sports offer different kinds of activities. Kasterer See is right next to the place it is named after, Bedburg-Kaster, providing a specific local reference point when finding your way around the district.
The examples in the district vary considerably in their themes and formats—from collections and audio stations to a walk through a landscape park and a cycling route. You can choose your hotel based on the experiences that matter most for your stay.
