Hervest: Nature and Industrial Heritage
Accommodation in Hervest
For a stay in Hervest, nature observation and industrial history offer different points of focus. The Hervester Bruch is known for its fen and wildlife, while Fürst Leopold tells the story of mining and the settlement. DAS LEO adds cultural events and courses to these themes. You can plan your trip around whether nature, industrial history or a cultural event is most important to you.
Nature Observation in the Hervester Bruch
The Hervester Bruch is a fen with extensive reed beds and a habitat for rare animal and plant species. Observation platforms and a boardwalk through the reeds offer opportunities to watch wildlife. These provide two different ways to observe: the platforms serve as viewpoints, while the boardwalk passes through the reed beds. The landscape and its wildlife are thus equally part of the nature experience.
The Industrial History of Fürst Leopold
The listed Fürst Leopold engine house is home to a historic twin tandem steam winding engine dating from 1912. The history of housing is also part of this story: the Fürst Leopold settlement in Hervest-Dorsten was completed in 1920 as a miners’ colony. More than 500 houses in the settlement were modernized and listed in the 1980s. This offers perspectives ranging from mining technology and the settlement’s original purpose as a miners’ colony to the later treatment of its buildings.
The permanent Leopold-Regal exhibition opened at the Fürst Leopold mine in 2017. The former Fürst Leopold mining site in Dorsten is now home to the CreativQuartier Fürst Leopold. Tours are offered through the engine house and around the mining site. The difference between these visit options is clear: you can see the historic engine in the hall, while a tour also takes you around the mining site. The site thus brings together mining history and present-day use.
Culture and Events at DAS LEO
DAS LEO can host concerts and other cultural events in its multipurpose hall and, weather permitting, outdoors on the “Playground,” using a mobile stage. The weather condition applies to the outdoor area; the multipurpose hall is another possible setting for events.
The Red Balloon Festival is a recurring music event held at the DAS LEO site in Hervest. The 2026 edition was the festival’s seventh. DAS LEO also accepts registrations for courses for children, young people and adults. Alongside events, courses for different age groups can therefore also be a reason to visit.
For planning your visit, distinguish between permanent attractions and changing offerings: tour schedules, course availability, and festival dates and programmes may change. If one of these offerings determines when you visit, check the latest information.
