Recklinghausen: Industrial Heritage, Spoil Tip and Haard
Accommodation in Recklinghausen
Recklinghausen in the Vest appeals to travelers with a range of interests: industrial heritage and cultural events sit alongside cycling and hiking opportunities; in Haltern am See, Roman history and canoeing experiences add to the mix. When choosing a hotel, it helps to decide on the main focus of your trip first. Would you like to visit the substation and Hoheward spoil tip, are you more drawn to the Haard countryside, or are you planning to spend time in Haltern am See? These places offer different highlights and can influence your choice of a suitable location.
Hoheward and Industrial Heritage
The Dragon Bridge connects the district park in Recklinghausen-Hochlarmark with the Hoheward spoil tip. At the top of the spoil tip are a horizon observatory and a sundial. The separate closure notice issued by the RVR determines whether visitors can access the observatory; check it before making plans. During the main season, from April to October, an additional information point run by the RVR Hoheward Visitor Center is open on weekends and public holidays. It is located right by the Emscher Park Cycle Route, near the Dragon Bridge, and provides information and personal advice. Opening details may change; check them before visiting.
The Recklinghausen substation is an anchor point on the Route of Industrial Heritage and is located near the Hoheward spoil tip. It is Germany’s largest electricity museum. Exhibits include a plasma globe, a walk-through tram and historical kitchen appliances that visitors can try out. The history of technology and hands-on exhibits give the museum its own cultural focus; the installations on the spoil tip offer a different highlight.
Trails Through the Landscape
There are also various options for active trips. The Recklinghausen district has a riding trail network of more than 300 kilometers. The Haard forests have more than 100 kilometers of riding trails. The district’s long-distance cycle routes are signposted and run mostly away from major roads. If you prefer to get around on foot, there are other options: the Hohe Mark Steig, which opened in 2021, and other hiking routes lead to the Stimberg and pass through the Haard in a way that is mindful of the natural environment.
Culture and History
The Ruhr Festival is an annual cultural event in Recklinghausen. If it is the reason for your trip, check the specific dates for your planned stay. In Haltern am See, the LWL Roman Museum presents the 2,000-year history of Haltern am See; Aliso Roman Park is one of the town’s special visitor highlights. The museum offers a connection to history, while the park is another visitor highlight. Canoe tours on the Lippe are also among the leisure activities in Haltern am See; check in advance whether a tour is available on your travel dates.
