Wipperfürth – Historic Center, Cycling and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Wipperfürth
Wipperfürth combines a historic town center with cycling and hiking routes. Local history and trails offer different ways to explore the destination and provide practical starting points for planning your trip.
Old Town and Architectural History
Wipperfürth’s historic center retains the layout of its predecessor from the 14th century. The octagonal basalt fountain in the market square dates from 1331. The two oldest houses next to the market square to survive the town fire of 1795 are Gasthaus Penne and the Old Town Hall. The Old Town Hall was built around 1780, acquired by the town in 1975, and later fully restored. The fountain and houses thus point to different periods in the town’s history.
The monastery complex represents another layer of history. It comprises a church and a four-winged monastery complex built between 1670 and 1674. Together with the fountain and the Old Town Hall, these buildings illustrate different periods of construction: from the medieval landmark in the market square to the 17th-century ensemble and the town hall dating from around 1780.
Cycling Routes and Landscape
Wipperfürth lies directly on the River Wupper and is surrounded by reservoirs in the Bergisches Land. The Kirchdorf cycle route consists of four cycling routes. Each begins and ends at the Ohler Wiesen parking lot in Wipperfürth and leads to the surrounding church villages. The four outer sections can be combined into a loop of around 59 kilometers around Wipperfürth. It passes through the gently hilly Bergisches Land and offers beautiful views. This allows you to choose between the individual routes to the church villages and the combined loop; its length is explicitly an approximate figure.
There is also a route for exploring on foot, with its own distinctive landscape: Rund um Wipperfürth passes through wooded, hilly terrain. Reservoirs and wide-ranging viewpoints are among the route’s features. While the Kirchdorf cycle route focuses on the four routes to the surrounding church villages and the loop that can be formed by combining them, woods, hills and views shape the landscape along Rund um Wipperfürth.
Practical Information for Your Visit
There is an e-bike charging station at the town hall in the market square. Check on site whether it is available. The Ecumenical Initiative rents out cargo bikes and tandems in Wipperfürth; some cargo bike models have child seats. Rental options may change, so check current availability before your trip.
The weekly market offers, among other things, fruit, vegetables, eggs, spices and fish. As market hours and the selection may change, it is worth checking them before visiting. The market thus provides another practical point of reference for planning your stay, alongside the buildings and routes.
