Minden combines distinctive water-engineering heritage with a historic city center and ecclesiastical collections. In the Upper and Lower Town, cobbled lanes and closely connected half-timbered houses shape the cityscape. You can choose different focal points for your stay: the cathedral and museum offer insights into the city’s history, while the waterway junction brings together engineering and river scenery.

Old Town, Cathedral and Cathedral Treasury

Minden Cathedral is more than 1,200 years old. Its history began at the end of the 8th century with the construction of a simple, towerless hall church on the cathedral hill. The Cathedral Treasury houses the Minden Cross, the Shrine of St. Peter, the Silver Madonna and other valuable museum treasures. The cityscape thus combines historic architecture with a collection of sacred artworks.

For pilgrims on the Sigwardsweg and on the Way of St. James Route No. 3 from Minden to Soest, the Cathedral Treasury is a stamping station and information point. The Cathedral Treasury app provides information about the exhibits and events in the treasury and Minden Cathedral; for specific program items, check the app’s current content. Minden Cathedral Treasury is accessible. If you have questions, contact the visitor service in the foyer at Kleiner Domhof 24. Check specific requirements with the visitor service before your arrival.

Waterway Junction and Locks

The Minden Waterway Junction is considered the world’s largest double waterway junction. It includes a 341-meter-long canal bridge that crosses the Weser and has been in place since the Rhine-Weser Canal opened in 1906. At this water-engineering structure, you can see both the connection between canal and river and a specific historical landmark.

A tour of about two hours provides an overview of the complex and its surroundings at the information center, using models, graphics and maps. It then leads to the modern Weser Lock and the historic Shaft Lock. Both locks are therefore included in the tour. If you plan to visit, check the current tour dates.

Museum and City History

The Minden Museum presents the city’s distinctive character in the past, present and future through a permanent exhibition on city history and special exhibitions. The permanent exhibition divides Minden’s history into seven chapters, offering different perspectives. The multimedia city model currently offers seven different city tours. It connects exploring the city’s history in the museum with digital tours of Minden.

Explore Minden Independently

You can explore the Old Town Route independently using the city map or digitally via Komoot. There are also various city and themed tours where you can learn about Minden’s history and stories. At the waterway junction, the adventure trail offers the opportunity to discover culture, history and nature at your own pace. You can choose from a specific Old Town route, themed tours and an independent adventure trail.

Another stop on the Weser is the ship mill near Minden city center. It is Germany’s only operational ship mill and has a restaurant attached. Visitors can learn from the millers how grain is turned into flour. The mill thus complements the major water-engineering structures with a different perspective on the use of the river and the work of processing grain.
