Minden-Lübbecke: Mills, Moors and Culture
Accommodation in Minden-Lübbecke
Minden-Lübbecke can be explored through a variety of themes: mills and art stations, moors and the Weser landscape, museums and routes. You can plan your stay around culture, nature, or cycling and hiking tours. The options differ not only in their destinations, but also in their format—from a museum visit to multi-day stages.
Mills, Art and Routes
The Mühlenkreis Minden-Lübbecke has 43 working wind, water and horse-powered mills. The Mill Route connects more than 40 wind-, water-, horse- or motor-powered mills in an “open-air mill museum” on a circular route of around 280 kilometres. The Mühlensteig offers a different timeframe: it leads to ten restored mills in the Wiehen and Weser Hills over four daily stages, each 11 to 20 kilometres long. These details make clear the difference between a longer circular route and a multi-stage hike.
Art and culture are also the focus of the LandArt Route. Five sub-routes connect more than 80 stations in the Mühlenkreis Minden-Lübbecke. Along easily accessible paths, you can discover artworks, studios, galleries and other stops in a variety of landscapes. As individual stations and access arrangements may change, it is worth checking the latest information before your visit.
Moorlands and the Weser
Well-known and popular natural areas in the district include the Großer Torfmoor in Hille and Lübbecke, the Oppenweher Moor in Stemwede and the Petershäger Weseraue. Guided walks with qualified nature and landscape guides are offered in the Großer Torfmoor. This lets you combine a visit to the natural area with an expert-led walk, while the other named natural areas are destinations in their own right for planning your excursions.
The Weser Cycle Route also offers a clear point of reference: it runs for around 520 kilometres along the Weser, from Hann. Münden in the Weser Uplands to Cuxhaven on the North Sea. In the Mühlenkreis, its route runs from Porta Westfalica to Petershagen. There are eleven cycling routes in the district in total, crossing the area in different directions. You can cover individual sections of the Weser Cycle Route by passenger boat. If you plan to do this, check the current timetable before setting out.
The Glacis Circular Hiking Trail is a circular route in Minden. It follows the Weser promenade, passes through the fishermen’s quarter and the botanical garden, and continues to the mouth of the Bastau, circling the city. At the Kaiser Wilhelm Monument on Wittekindsberg, which is 268 metres high, panoramic views open up to the north and south. The monument is one of Germany’s most important national monuments.
Glass, Crafts and History
At the LWL Industrial Museum Glashütte Gernheim, you can watch glassmakers use a blowpipe, wooden mould and shears to shape vessels from molten glass in the glass tower, built in 1826. The collection comprises around 2,000 exhibits, including vessels ranging from preserving jars to ornate goblets. Much of the early industrial factory village of Gernheim has also been preserved in what is now Petershagen, in connection with the museum.
At the Museumshof Rahden, a fully furnished farmstead illustrates 19th-century life, rural daily routines and traditional craft techniques. The Besucher-Bergwerk und Museum Kleinenbremen offers another way to explore history: experienced mine guides lead visitors through the underground world and explain the lives of miners, as well as the tools and loading and haulage equipment. Above ground, the mining trail near the Besucher-Bergwerk follows the traces of ore mining and the extraction of ore and limestone.
Concerts, theatre performances and readings are regularly held underground at the Besucher-Bergwerk und Museum Kleinenbremen. For a specific date, it is a good idea to check the current events calendar. In Petershagen, the historic Windheim No2 farmstead also provides a cultural setting: events take place in the old threshing floor of the half-timbered house, in the bakehouse, in the courtyard and in the garden; programmes and opening details may change.
In Minden, potts park is a family amusement park. Together with the museums, mills and natural areas, it offers a range of reasons to visit, without requiring every interest to fit into the same route.
Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests
The Mill Route and the Mühlensteig differ in length and format, while taking individual sections of the Weser Cycle Route by passenger boat is another option. Visitors interested in culture can consider Glashütte Gernheim, Museumshof Rahden or events in Kleinenbremen and Windheim No2. Those planning to visit natural areas will find further named destinations in the moors and the Weseraue. Choose where to stay based on the stops that actually matter for your trip.
