Werdohl: Lenne Route, Climbing Rocks and Industrial Heritage
Accommodation in Werdohl
Werdohl offers a range of reasons to visit: the Lenne Route passes through the town, and there are several hiking trails and rocks with established climbing routes. Its industrial history dates back to the 18th century.
Lenne Route and Hiking Trails
The Lenne Route runs through Werdohl and is a good option for a trip focused on cycling. The marked 1.9-kilometre town-centre trail offers a different perspective on the town: the Lenne Fountain and the Lenne river promenade are by the town bridge; the “Lenneken” sculpture also stands there, watching the fountain with an umbrella.
The 1.8-kilometre forest nature trail runs from Landwehr at the Protestant cemetery to the Hexentanzplatz in Werdohl. At 1.8 kilometres, it is just shorter than the 1.9-kilometre town-centre trail. The Eichelhäherweg is another hiking trail in the Dösseln–Brenge area. A viewpoint above Osmecke offers a view of Werdohl. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Climbing on Werdohl’s Rocks
The Denkmalwand is the first rock you reach on the way from Altenaer Straße to the climbing area; established routes there range from intermediate to difficult. The Lennewächter, somewhat hidden among the greenery, also has established, challenging routes. Before climbing, confirm routes and availability locally; grades and information may change.
The Lennebrüggler is about 50 metres beyond the Lenneplatte and has eight climbing routes, mostly graded 7, as well as two more routes graded 4. The Werdohler Neunerplatte has 19 routes, mostly slab climbs on a gentle incline, graded 4 and 5. The Lenneplatte is used for climbing instruction and beginner courses. Course offerings and registration details may change.
Industrial History and the Town Museum
Industrialisation is part of Werdohl’s history. In 1789, a black-plate rolling mill described as the first on the European continent was established in Werdohl-Elverlingsen; in 1817, it was converted into Germany’s first wire rolling mill. The permanent exhibition at the Werdohl Town Museum comprises four themed rooms. They explore the economic, social and cultural changes brought about by industrialisation and the town’s rapid growth. This offers a perspective ranging from the specific mill to changes in urban life. Check the current visitor arrangements before your visit.
Fishing on the Lenne
In the Werdohl area, the Lenne is a grayling and trout zone. If fishing is part of your travel plans, check local fishing authorities for access and permit requirements.
