Discover Hemer: Felsenmeer, GeoPfad and Heinrichshöhle
Accommodation in Hemer
If you’re looking for a hotel in Hemer, you can tailor your stay to suit different interests: the Felsenmeer karst landscape, the trails of the “Sundwiger Schätze” GeoPfad, the Heinrichshöhle cave, or the Hemeraner Herbsttage. The trails, guided tours and event features give you a clear idea of what Hemer has to offer for your trip.
Felsenmeer: Karst Landscape and Circular Trail
The Felsenmeer in Hemer is a karst landscape that you can explore for free via a circular trail with viewing platforms and panoramic bridges. The area has been a nature reserve since 1968 and is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. The natural landscape, circular trail and viewing structures come together to create a shared visitor experience.
“Sundwiger Schätze” GeoPfad: Routes and Navigation
The GeoPfad is 2.6 kilometers long and includes 18 stops. There are no information boards along the route; information about the stops is available online on the GeoPark Ruhrgebiet website. This lets you explore the trail’s content without relying on information boards on site.
To choose a route, you can compare the sections covered by the stops: the northwest route includes stops 1 to 12, and the southeast route includes stops 13 to 18. Each section is around 1.3 kilometers long, including the outward and return journeys. So the distance given for each section includes the return journey.
The GeoPfad starts at the Heinrichshöhle car park, In den Weiden 29, 58675 Hemer. The Sundwig Meise bus stop is 50 meters away. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetables in advance. The cave trail on the GeoPfad is narrow, uneven and suitable for pedestrians only. The road for residents and the cycle path running below it provide accessible alternatives. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.
Heinrichshöhle and Felsenmeer Museum
The Heinrichshöhle is located in Hemer’s Sundwig district. Between 1903 and 1905, local innkeeper Heinrich Meise, who lived in Sundwig at the time, opened the cave to visitors. The standard tour lasts about 40 minutes. Special themed tours, educational programs and tours for children are also available. The approximate duration of the standard tour helps you plan this part of your itinerary.
The Felsenmeer Museum is another destination with its own visitor experience. It is run by the BĂĽrger- und Heimatverein Hemer. Group tours can be arranged by telephone, including outside opening hours. If you are planning a group visit, arrange it by phone; a group tour is not guaranteed here for individual visitors.
Hemeraner Herbsttage
The Hemeraner Herbsttage date back to 1972. According to the City of Hemer, they are among the region’s most popular town festivals. Recurring program features include amusement rides, walking acts and clowns, as well as a children’s flea market on Saturdays and Sundays.
The event also features more than 250 exhibitors offering arts and crafts, along with food stalls, a car market and an autumn fair. These attractions take place on Saturdays and Sundays at an event site stretching well over a kilometer. Individual editions and programs may vary. If you want to combine your trip with the Herbsttage, check the dates and program for the specific edition.
