Warburg combines the Desenberg with city history and trails for hiking and cycling. The Desenberg is a basalt volcanic plug and a landmark of the city of Warburg and the Daseburg district. This gives you a clear choice of themes when planning your trip: views and castle ruins, historical development, or active routes.

The Desenberg: Landmark and Views

A hiking trail leads to the castle ruins on the Desenberg. The tower is open to visitors and offers a 360-degree panoramic view over the Warburger Börde, as well as towards the Egge and Solling hills and as far as Hesse. This destination brings together a route to the ruins and sweeping views across the landscape. Check current trail information before setting out.

Exploring on Foot and by Bike

At the beginning, the Diemeltaler Schmetterlings-Steig trail passes through Warburg to just before the KuhlemĂĽhle. Along this section, field tracks alternate with natural forest paths. From Warburg railway station, you can reach the trail on foot via the signposted X2 hiking trail. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetables.

A Desenberg panoramic tour described in 2026 is around 24 kilometres long. It starts at Neustadtmarkt in the historic city centre, passes Warburg railway station in the direction of the Desenberg, and returns to the historic city centre via the Diemel and Twiste valleys. The route mainly uses well-maintained paved paths and is considered manageable for most cyclists. While the hiking trail leads to the castle ruins, the cycling tour describes a circular route between the city centre, the Desenberg and the two valleys. Check route conditions before cycling.

City History from Two Perspectives

At the Museum im „Stern“, the city history section illustrates the development of the twin city of Warburg and neighbouring monastic territories up to 1803. The economic history section covers a different period: Warburg’s transformation in the 19th century from an agricultural town into a central town in the Börde. The two topics offer different perspectives on urban development and economic change.

The former city fortifications are another historical sight: large sections of Warburg’s city wall, once three kilometres long, can still be seen. Together with the museum’s exhibits, they offer another way to explore the city’s history.

Wider Travel Region: Höxter

In the wider travel region of Höxter, the district combines culture, nature and active holidays in the hilly uplands of the Teutoburg Forest and the Weser Uplands. The 65-kilometre Netheradweg follows the Nethe from its source to its mouth at the Weser and runs between Bad Driburg and Höxter. The approximately 315-kilometre Kloster-Garten-Route is also part of the region. It passes through the cultural region of the Höxter district and can be cycled in five stages of 52 to 67 kilometres each. Along the route, 28 Bible markers make it a pilgrimage trail.

When looking for a hotel in Warburg, you can first decide what matters most to you: the Desenberg and its views, the city’s history, or one of the hiking and cycling routes described here. This lets you connect your accommodation search with the things you’re interested in during your stay.
