Gehrden is located on the eastern slope of the Eggegebirge and offers cultural and historical attractions as well as places to visit in the castle park and trails through the countryside. If you are looking for a hotel in Gehrden, churches, historical traces, and specific routes can help you decide which sides of the town you would like to explore during your stay.

Monastery Church, Bells and Tradition

At the heart of the town’s history is the former Benedictine abbey church of St. Peter and Paul. Built around 1140 as a Romanesque pillar basilica, it is one of the art-historically significant churches in the Archdiocese of Paderborn. The church houses the largest historic peal of bells in Westphalia, comprising nine bells. The oldest has rung since the tower was built in the early 13th century—considerably later than the church building, erected around 1140.

In the rectory, you can view precious liturgical objects and paintings spanning four centuries. In addition, Gehrden’s Good Friday procession with the cross is a religious tradition that continues to have significance beyond the region. Sacred art, architectural history, and a continuing custom thus offer different perspectives on the town’s history.

St. Catherine’s Chapel also dates from 1668. Beside it stands a double-sided Baroque wayside shrine depicting a legend from the life of St. Catherine. The dates place the different features in chronological context: from the church around 1140, to the tower from the early 13th century and St. Catherine’s Chapel from 1668, through to the fruit tree nature trail, established in 1995.

Castle Park and Townscape

Gehrden Castle Park preserves visible, listed remains of a former medieval monastery. It is also home to 1,000 historic roses and the Twelve Apostles Lime Tree, which has grown together from twelve individual trees. These details highlight different features: the monastery remains are protected architectural heritage, the lime tree is notable for its unusual growth form, and the roses for their number and historic character.

Other features of the town include a wood pasture and half-timbered buildings that shape its townscape. Gehrden also has tennis and mini-golf facilities. Alongside historic attractions, there are therefore specific leisure activities to enjoy.

Nature Trails and Hiking

Several nature trails explore different themes. The fruit tree nature trail was established in 1995. At the waterway nature trail along the Ă–se, information boards explain the stream and the local wildlife in the surrounding area. The trails thus have different focuses: one centers on fruit trees, while the other provides information about the waterway and wildlife.

One specific hiking option is the accessible Gehrden hiking trail. The 2.87-kilometer route is classified as an easy circular trail and a themed trail. The route description includes a 1.3-kilometer out-and-back spur through the Ă–se valley, offering a distant view of the Eggegebirge. When planning, keep the two distance figures distinct: 2.87 kilometers refers to the circular trail, while 1.3 kilometers refers to the spur.
