Obermarsberg combines a distinctive mountain plateau with a layered local history. Eresburg, churches, fortification remains and historic trails give your trip several thematic focal points. If you are looking for a hotel in Obermarsberg, you can start planning by weighing up whether the landscape, church architecture or traces of the former fortifications are your main interest.

Location on the Mountain Plateau

The former town of Obermarsberg lies on a mountain plateau that drops steeply on three sides. The Eresburg plateau is framed by the Diemel to the west and the Glinde to the east. Two aspects are therefore important for understanding the landscape: the shape of the mountain plateau and the location of the rivers on either side of the Eresburg plateau. Together, they give a concrete impression of the topography that has shaped the place.

Local History and Architecture

Obermarsberg is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the Hochsauerland district. The Eresburg and Charlemagne are associated with the town, as are a royal Basilica of St. Peter and the Benedictine monastery of Obermarsberg, founded by Charlemagne. The settlement’s history, church architecture and monastic history are therefore among the town’s different historical themes.

The Catholic Church of St. Nicholas was first mentioned in 1247 and is one of the most significant examples of early Gothic architecture in Westphalia. It is a Gothic hall church with two bays and an octagonal west tower. The collegiate church offers a different architectural emphasis: its magnificent Baroque interior comes from the workshop of Heinrich and Christophel Papen. For anyone interested in architecture, the distinction is clear: the Church of St. Nicholas stands out for its early Gothic style and architectural form, while the collegiate church is notable for its Baroque interior.

Haus Böttcher also provides a specific historical reference. Dating from 1589, it is the oldest surviving house in the town of Marsberg. The house is located in Obermarsberg; the superlative refers to the town of Marsberg. This individual building, with its precise construction date, complements the churches as a feature of local history.

Fortification Remains and Buttenturm

The remains of Obermarsberg’s ring wall are parts of the fortifications on Eresberg, which were destroyed in 1646. Of the seven towers in the former fortification, two are still partially preserved. These figures and the surviving remains make clear that only part of the former towers has been preserved.

The Buttenturm offers another concrete glimpse into local history: from there, you can enjoy views across the Diemel valley. Its five-metre-deep cellar was once used as a prison. The view and the cellar’s former use are two distinct features of the same tower.

Historic Trails

A historic circular trail showcases the distinctive features of the Obermarsberg district. Established in 2008, the Sagenweg trail passes historical landmarks and runs through historic Obermarsberg. Their different emphases can help you choose between the trails: the circular trail focuses on the district’s distinctive features, while the Sagenweg is defined by its route past historical landmarks and through the town. You can use this to decide whether you are more interested in an overview of the district or in the Sagenweg’s described route.
