Discover Beringhausen
Accommodation in Beringhausen
Beringhausen lies in the Hoppecke Valley, where forest trails wind through steep slopes. The landscape also includes two former red iron ore mining sites: the Antonie mine south of the village and Grottenberg to the west, near a diabase quarry. The valley, wooded slopes and traces of former ore mining reveal different facets of the area.
Hiking with a view
The Beringhauser Aussichten themed trail is a moderate 8.4-kilometre hike with 281 metres of ascent. Its highlights include panoramic views across the Hoppecke Valley towards Obermarsberg, Lake Diemelsee and the Waldecker Upland. The distance, ascent and moderate difficulty rating provide concrete points of reference for assessing the scope of the hike.
Along the way, there are viewpoints, panoramic information boards, forest sofas and panoramic windows. The route therefore features not only scenic views, but also a variety of viewing features and places to sit. When choosing a hike, you can compare the landscape views with the stated route profile.
Traces of local history
The Jewish cemetery lies on a slope near the road to Padberg. It contains 39 gravestones, most of which date from the second half of the 19th century. The site is largely enclosed by narrow, vertically standing sandstone slabs. Its location, gravestones and enclosure give the cemetery a distinctive historical character.
A surviving sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands beside the Hoppecke bridge in the village centre. It is approximately 160 centimetres tall and probably dates from the mid-18th century. Parts of the furnishings in the Catholic parish church of St. Mark are also significant evidence of the parish’s earlier history. The former church building, dating from the 13th century, was demolished in 1922.

Marsberg as a wider travel destination
The wider travel destination of Marsberg offers further ideas for planning a trip. In Obermarsberg, you can visit remnants of the old town wall, including the water tower and Buttenturm tower. A bird care station has been operating in Marsberg-Essentho for over 40 years. Visits and guided tours are possible only by prior arrangement; check whether an appointment is available before visiting.
A centre for information about bionics, the regional mining industry and geology is located in an open-sided, covered multipurpose pavilion. It is near the Grube Reinhard recreation area (Meilerplatz), on the Diemel near Giershagen. The wider Marsberg area therefore offers not only historical remains, but also topics relating to geology and the regional mining industry. The Marsberg area also includes the Marsberg archery course, located on the site of a former copper mine; it covers 5.9 hectares.
