In Senden, the options range from a short circular route along the Stever to signposted hiking trails and a long cycling route. Historic churches and Senden Castle add to the picture. You can plan your trip around the themes that interest you: exploring the outdoors, learning about local history, or combining both.

Cycling routes and walks in Senden

The BĂĽrgerpark has four interactive stations that invite visitors to explore and discover. They are part of the family-friendly SteverLandRoute. The route is around 70 kilometres long and runs from Nottuln to Haltern am See; the stations are located in the BĂĽrgerpark in Senden. This brings together a hands-on discovery experience in the park and a longer cycling route, without requiring you to plan the entire route for a visit to the park.

A shorter circular route for cyclists and pedestrians is about two kilometres long. It starts at the castle grounds, follows the renatured Stever through Sendener BĂĽrgerpark and returns to Hafenplatz via the town centre. Two signposted circular trails are available for hiking in the Venner Moor. In total, around 300 kilometres of marked cycling and hiking trails invite you to explore the municipality of Senden and its surroundings.

The SteverLandRoute and the circular route differ considerably in length: one connects Nottuln with Haltern am See, while the other loops through Senden. This lets you choose between an extended cycling tour and a shorter local route when planning your trip. Observe the nature conservation notices in the Venner Moor: cyclists are directed along the routes to the hikers’ car park or the Dortmund-Ems Canal; cycling within the area is not permitted.

Water, nature and activities

In summer, water sports enthusiasts and people looking to swim or sunbathe often visit the Alte Fahrt section of the Dortmund-Ems Canal. Visitors can also go fishing in Senden, including at the Dortmund-Ems Canal. Before fishing, check the applicable permits and required equipment. These notes can help you plan your activities in advance without conflating the different uses of the water.

Senden Castle and historic churches

A self-guided historical tour of Senden runs from the town hall via St. Laurentius Church to the castle and its park. It takes around 90 minutes and follows a clearly defined route through several historic sites. Senden Castle has a varied building and usage history spanning more than 500 years. Public tours of the castle and its park are offered on the second Sunday of each month at 3 pm; check the specific date before your visit.

St. Johannes parish church in Senden-Venne also brings together architectural history and a long local history. Its brightly decorated wooden beam ceiling dates from 1621. The history of St. Johannes in Venne began with a hospital and a way station for crusaders; Venne has been documented as a parish since 1290. The ceiling, the church building and the historical records offer different points of interest for a visit.

In Ottmarsbocholt, the Spieker local history museum and the small bakehouse can be visited by appointment. Ask the local history association about availability. For practical convenience, the entrance area of the Senden Tourist Information office has a digital locker unit with an integrated e-bike charging station. Check that the facilities are available before your trip.
