Coesfeld: City History, Culture and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Coesfeld
In Coesfeld, you can discover traces of the town’s fortifications and history, cultural venues, a central park, and options for walking tours as well as cycling and hiking tours. When planning, it is also important to consider how you want to explore: self-guided walking tours do not require a booking, while the night watchman tour can be booked. The sites and routes offer different focuses, so you can shape your stay around architectural history, cultural venues, or outdoor activities.
City History in Different Forms
The Walkenbrückentor is a surviving remnant of Coesfeld’s 14th-century town fortifications. The building houses the town museum “DAS TOR,” which tells the story of Coesfeld’s past. Two perspectives come together in this one building: the surviving evidence of the fortifications and the museum’s presentation of the town’s history. The Bischofsmühle offers a different focus. It is a working museum mill with equipment dating from around 1900.
The former synagogue is also used for cultural events and exhibitions. The Gabelkreuz is considered the oldest cross of its kind in Westphalia. Since the end of 2022, the Natz-Thier-Haus has served as a memorial site. The Natz-Thier Art and Culture Workshop and the Fair Gehandelt shop explore the work of Natz Thier through art there. Check current access arrangements before your visit.
Planning Walking Tours and Routes
The Citadellenweg opened in 2025 and is a circular route around and across the former grounds of Ludgerusburg. Fourteen stations explore the former fortress site thematically. For exploring on your own, Coesfeld also offers self-guided walking tours that require no booking, as well as free downloadable accompanying materials. The night watchman tour is another option and can be booked: it takes you through winding streets and explores the town’s history.
Schlosspark and the Berkel
Schlosspark, also known as Liebfrauenpark, opened to the public in 1980. Today, the park in central Coesfeld serves as a meeting place and recreation area. It is also a venue for cultural events and Sport-im-Park activities. Along the Berkel in the town center, design features bring the river into the urban landscape; the redevelopment also includes direct access to the water.
Cycling and Getting Your Bearings in the Region
Coesfeld lies on the 152-kilometer Baumberge Sandstone Route, which forms a circular trail. The route passes through a hilly landscape of forests, fields, and meadows, linking more than 200 sandstone buildings. Beyond the route itself, Coesfeld district is characterized by an exceptionally high density of castles, fortresses, and historic manor houses.
The Tourist Information office is located in the town hall’s citizens’ service office. There you can get information about Coesfeld and the surrounding area, including hiking and cycling maps. In the Baumberge region, bicycles can be taken on scheduled buses if space is available. There are also local circular hiking trails in Coesfeld and Lette, ranging from 4 to 20 kilometers. Both the circular route and its length therefore provide practical points of reference when choosing a tour.
